Miscues and Missteps Torpedo Chances of Win

Simply stated, Georgia needed to do three things to win on Saturday. It failed across the board and the result was a humiliating faceplant.

Brave The Early Burst

Once the noon kickoff time was announced, it worried me.

You’ll have Georgia coming off a game last Saturday night going up against a bye-week rested South Carolina. In honesty, it would not surprise me to see South Carolina coming out with its hair on fire and putting the fear of god into the Georgia crowd. Key for Georgia will be to despite all things, control the early part of the game.

Oops, the Dawgs defense did it again. For the second week in a row, a coverage breakdown involving Richard LeCounte put an early touchdown on the board for the opposing offense. Overall, Georgia’s offense, not to mention its playcalling, sputtered and misfired and it never got out of its own way.

Between the throwing duct tape against the wall run up the middle approach by James Coley and not being able to consistently force three and outs against South Carolina’s thrd-string quarterback, Georgia did not start or finish well.

Stand Tall Against The Run

One of the better rushing attack on Georgia’s schedule comes its way by way of Rico Dowdle. Georgia has seen marked improvements on its defensive front, ranking fifth-best nationally, and that, among the starters and the guys that Georgia plugs in, will have to continue.

If there’s a way for Georgia to control the way this game goes, it’ll be to force third and longs and take the Gamecocks ground game out of it,

In theory, when you face a third-string quarterback, you should be able to take over the game on defense and force the game into their hands. That did not happen as the Gamecocks were able to sustain enough drives to limit Georgia’s offense drives - and given the Dawgs offensive ineptness, it led to a loss. For the game, Dowdle rushed for 79 yards. As a team, Georgia outrushed South Carolina by only a 173-142 advantage. Given Georgia’s talent in the offensive backfield and alleged all-world offensive line, that’s inexcusable.

Let Fromm be Fromm

The closest thing to Jake Fromm being cut loose and spread the field was last week, and it was Fromm at his best. Whatever the gameplan was last week, James Coley should do the exact same thing.

There’s no other way to slice this one up. Fromm had, by far, the worst game of his career as a Bulldog. When one player alone is responsible for four turnovers - three interceptions and a mishandled snap, you won’t beat many teams.

It wasn’t all on Fromm, however. Uninspired playcalling to consistently set up third and long makes it easy for a defense to defend against the pass, as well.

Georgia has some inexperience at receiver. An inability to get open probably played a role, especially with Lawrence Cager leaving the game with an injury. That said, it’s mid-October, and the lack of game experience has to go out the window at this point.

I had this crazy buddy named Dave who was a huge Bulldog fan. He was sitting around in east Georgia somewhere when he turned to me and said, "MD, there's 100 things every fan needs to know about each Georgia Bulldogs football game. Here's 15 of them."

1) That was one to savor. Really, there have been few times that Georgia has beaten Steve Spurrier-coached teams, and even fewer that were close to that convincing. The Head Ball Coach was grappling for answers in the post-game but simply admitted that his is not a very good football team right now. That does my heart good.

2) Brian Schottenheimer can totally do this. As wonderful as the execution by Lambert, Chubb, Mitchell, Michel and others might have been, Schotty seemed to likewise be in the zone. Every call seemed to work, even if it was not one I necessarily would have made in his shoes.

3) It won't always be like this. I'm fairly certain that at some point Lambert is going to have a tough stretch. His receivers aren't always going to help him out the way they did last night. But the shot of confidence derived from this weekend's performance was a well-needed boost.

4) Nick Chubb, still a manimal. Chubb's 159 yards bring his total on the young season to 468, 156 yards per game. Assuming Georgia plays a 12 game regular season and at least a bowl game, he's on track to be the Red and Black's first back to ever gain 2000 yards in a single season.

5) It was a big recruiting win for Georgia, too. We'll have more on this tonight, but suffice it to say that some big targets were quite impressed with what they saw both on and off the field.

6) The first down playcalling was much improved. One aspect of the offensive plan against Vandy that bugged me was the first down run/pass mix. Georgia ran it 26 times versus only 5 passes on first down against the Commodores. Against the Gamecocks that turned around big time as Georgia threw it 15 times on first down. That had a lot to do with the South Carolina defense being just a little off balance, and it also led to some plays that really put Georgia in solid down/distance/field position situations.

7) How about Malcolm Mitchell? His 122 yards receiving on 8 catches was his most since 2012 and tied him for 10th on the Georgia all-time receptions list. It was also a promising sign for Lambert long-term. I suspected Mitchell would get more touches this week, but I certainly didn't expect that kind of night. Great for him.

8) Georgia quietly has the best offensive line in the SEC. LSU fans may quibble with that assessment. But Georgia's front once again didn't surrender a single sack on Saturday night. They've allowed two through three games, and that despite playing from ahead for most of the year with opposing defenses gunning for big plays the whole time. That's to say nothing of the holes Chubb, Michel, and company have been running through.

9) Special teams will always worry me. It's just unavoidable. Last week it was Marshall Morgan's kicking. This week it was a couple of kickoff returns that could have gone the distance and a relatively poor kick return average. There's a lot that goes into the special teams game. And I've always believed that most teams don't practice it as much as they should. But I've come to embrace the notion that the last "perfect" special teams effort I saw from the Bulldogs was last year's Clemson game, and it may be the last one I ever see.

10) That Terry Godwin is going to be something. There was actually a pretty spirited debate among SB Nation recruiting writers last year about Terry Godwin. Some thought he was not as fast on the field as claimed, others weren't sure if he had the toughness to be an every down SEC receiver. All admitted that he would have moments when he'd wow everyone in the stadium. After Saturday (his first start) I'm more and more coming around to the position that once he polishes his game some he'll be among the best in the conference.

11) The rankings really aren't that important. At least that's what I keep telling myself. Georgia remains #7 in the AP poll after being jumped by Ole Miss and Notre Dame. That's a little frustrating, because I thought the 'Dawgs would return to the top 5 for the first time since the 2013 preseason poll. But Georgia's going to have plenty of chances to impress the playoff committee, the only poll voters who really matter, between now and December.

12) Ole Miss isn't that good. I don't mean that to sound like a slight to the Rebels, who held on to beat Alabama on the road early this morning, 43-37. The Rebels did what you have to do to win on the road in the SEC, taking advantage of turnovers and short fields to score enough points to outlast the momentum. But Bama's offensive situation is a mess, and Ole Miss isn't going to get that many easy scoring opportunities against the rest of their schedule.

13) Do it, Pruitt. The Georgia defense looked sound if not blatantly spectacular. South Carolina ground out 174 yards on the ground, but 68 of those came after Georgia hit the 45 point mark late in the 3rd and had the game well in hand. The Gamecocks were held 150 yards below their season average.

14) It's okay, Kubes. Brandon Kublanow suffered the indignity of a center butt fumble, but we still love him around these parts.

15) Steve Spurrier throwing things will never, ever get old.

A Special Night – #SpurrierRetires*

Maybe it was just me and maybe I'm living in some alternate universe right now, but tonight felt special. Really special. Record Breaking Special. Spurrier Retiring Special.* For the last two weeks we've been wringing our hands wondering just what in tarnation the folks at Butts-Mehre were thinking with respect to our Quarterback situation. We didn't know if we were ever going to have a starter at QB. Our only hope lay in Chubb.

Tonight we found out what they were thinking. Tonight convinced me that everyone who suspected trickery was going on at Butts-Mehre was absolutely 100% correct. Our coaching staff knew exactly what Greyson Lambert was capable of all along. They simply chose to hold back to keep the OBC guessing and unable to properly prepare for us. We all know Coach Spurrier spends 365 days each year preparing to play us. This year someone in our coaching staff refused to give him anything to work with.

Tonight we repaid an old debt and hung half a hundred on Spurrier between the hedges. Chubb had his 11th consecutive game with over 100 yards rushing. I bet you can guess who has 12. Greyson Lambert over took Mike Bobo for the school record for most consecutive complete passes and the NCAA record for highest percent complete in a single game where there were at least 20 attempts. As Monty_Python noted in the post game thread, Lambert did all of the following:

Completed 20 consecutive passes (UGA record)

Ran twice, once for 9 yards

Completed 24 of 25 passes for a 96% completion percentage (NCAA record)

Threw for a total of 330 yards

Averaged more than 13 yards per pass attempt

Completed passes to 9 different receivers

3 touchdowns

On top of Lambert's incredible stats tonight we also have Chubb's contribution:

21 total carries

159 total yards

7.6 yards per carry average

2 touchdowns

To be sure, we have multiple weapons both offensively and defensively. For that we must thank the Almighty and please remember to continue to pray for the health of Mr. Chubb* (suggested prayer found at the end of this article) and the rest of the Bulldog Team, Staff & Coaches.

It is therefore my deepest honor and privilege to once again bring to you, the Mark Richt Victory Watch.

Mark Richt has now secured his 139th career win, in only 187 total games as the head man in charge in the Classic City. Coach Richt currently boasts a 139-48 record and a .7433 winning percentage. At the identical juncture in their careers:

Coach Wally Butts was 115-64-8 (.6150) following a loss to Mississippi State between the hedges.

Vince Dooley and the 1980 National Championship Bulldogs featuring Herschel Walker had just won their seventh game of the season against Kentucky bringing Coach Dooley to an all-time record of 125-56-6 (.6684).

Coach Richt is now one win shy of Coach Butts total wins during his tenure. Mark Richt remains statistically head and shoulders above his historical coevals at the same point in their respective careers and the one man for whom I would leave my new husband, Mr. Podunkdawg, should I be presented with such an opportunity.

I'll be back later in the week to update the #Chubb4Heisman campaign, until then . . .

Go 'Dawgs !!!

*There is no actual official word of a Steve Spurrier Retirement. There is not even a reliable anonymous source. There is only wishful thinking from The Bulldog Nation and I suspect a large number of the Gamecock Nation as well as a large number of suggestions on Twitter. Bon Jour y'all.

**Dear Lord, We ask in earnest request that you have a hedge of protection over Nick Chubb to maintain his health, add strength to his legs, and quickness to his feet. So that he might lead our Glorious Dawgs to extraordinary feats. Deliver Chubb to a Heisman crown and make the Dawg Nation, National Championship bound.
I have a world of respect for Steve Spurrier. The guy is a certifiable football legend, an offensive innovator and a tactician without peer. I cannot express fully how much I admire the head coach of the South Carolina Gamecocks as a football coach.

Having said that, there's a certain poetic justice to the Head Ball Coach getting 52 hung on him in perhaps his last trip to Athens. Because he is a brash, outspoken old cuss who would have beaten Georgia 52-20 tonight if he could have. But it wasn't in the cards, and now football fans both inside and outside the Palmetto State are openly wondering whether the progenitor of the Fun N' Gun offense may need to hang up the clipboard, whether he's ready or not. And the man who got his start in the coaching ranks at ACC member Duke has a fellow ACC refugee from Virginia to thank for those questions.

This week on Committed to the G Murf and I talked about how Greyson Lambert's 0-7 first half performance last week against Vanderbilt wasn't that big a concern. We swore that Lambert was really only a smidgen away from doing some good things. About how he just needed to get in a rhythm. For some receivers to make a catch for him. To just execute.

I don't want to speak for Murf, but I for one had no idea whatsoever that he was going to go out and have a night for the history books. Lambert broke Mike Bobo's record for the most consecutive completions by a UGA quarterback (20). He set a new FBS record for the highest completion percentage for a game by nailing 96% of his throws, 24 of 25 for 330 yards. It was the kind of effort you usually only see after plugging in your PlayStation.

But it wasn't just Lambert. The Bulldog offense rolled up 576 yards on the night, over 150 above their season average. It was an incredible 9.14 yards per snap. Georgia was a poor 25% on third down conversions. But that's burying the headline, because Georgia's offense only faced 4 third downs for the entire game. Again, it was like some unlocked cheat code from NCAA Football 2k10.

For most of the night the Bulldogs looked like they could do whatever they wanted, whenever they wanted. Lambert was surreal, but a lot of credit also falls to Georgia offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, who kept the Gamecock defense off-balance with a quick passing game mixed with bruising power runs. He also took a few chances in his play calling, and almost all of them seemed to work. It really, truly looked like (as some had speculated) the Bulldog offensive playbook had not really even been cracked halfway open for the first two weeks of the season.

Nick Chubb churned out 159 yards on 21 carries, just a shade above his 154.5 yard average on the season. He also eclipsed the 2000 yard mark for his Georgia career and appears to only just be getting started. And he may not have even had the best night of any Georgia running back. One could certainly make the case that Sony Michel's 3 touchdown night (2 through the air and 1 on the ground) was just as meaningful.

The defense also had plenty to crow about, holding the Gamecocks to a paltry (poultry?) 258 yards of offense, nearly 150 below their season average. The Gamecocks' best offensive game plan was to allow freshman QB Lorenzo Nunez out of Kennesaw to run the option and just not put the ball in the air. That was good enough to keep things close for a while, but it was never going to be good enough to win against a Bulldog defense that has been very good against the run all year.

In the end, it was a satisfying exorcism of the demons of 20 years ago. One imagines, speaking of the occult, that Steve Spurrier would be willing to engage in some sort of dark rite to prevent this from being his last trip to Athens. And while he may yet get the Bulldogs again in 2016 in Columbia, I can't imagine the Ole Ball Coach hanging around for many more years of the kind of losses he's suffered during the past two weeks. Tonight Georgia robbed Steve Spurrier of the joy he's savored so frequently over the years against the Red and Black. And it was delicious. Until later . . .

So far we've had us some fun. Lambert is doing much better with the passing game. 8/12 then 11/21 now 14/15 for 190 yards in the first half?? Where has he been hiding the last two weeks??!!! Richt said in his half time interview that we have a good scheme. He totally planned the Lambert slow start the last two weeks. At least that's my story and I am sticking to it! Evil Richt is in the house y'all!

Chubb is still #ChubbStrong and racking up more reasons why #Chubb4Heisman. Sony & Mitchell are doing their thing.

We've had our hiccups - a little face mask here, a little oopsies there, a little fender bender in my house. But as of the end of the first half, we're up by 2 scores 24-13. If I need to keep walking outside & back in to get us more TD's, well these flip flops were made for walking and that's just what I'll do. Cuz today's the day these Dawgs are gonna walk all over you (Spurrier.)

Sure hope you took over on the first two questions MaconDawg asked Friday. So far Lambert's completion percentage is well above 59.9% and he's already thrown for 190 yards. Perhaps MD started his game day drinking a little early this week???

I don't know about you but I'm ready to #FinishTheDrill in the second half. Don't forget to pray for Chubb* and et's get it done...

Go Dawgs!!!

*Dear Lord, We ask in earnest request that you have a hedge of protection over Nick Chubb to maintain his health, add strength to his legs, and quickness to his feet. So that he might lead our Glorious Dawgs to extraordinary feats. Deliver Chubb to a Heisman crown and make the Dawg Nation, National Championship bound. And all the people of this Church say "Go Dawgs!!"
