Lorenzo Carter was among the top remaining recruits on everyone's board. An Atlanta football vagabond of sorts, Carter has killed it for everyone from Mays to Whitefield Academy to Norcross over the last 4 years. And after being pursued by Nick Saban, Will Muschamp, Rodney Garner, and pretty much everyone in the southeast over the last dozen or more months, he announced on National Signing Day that he wanted to play for Georgia.

So, what did Georgia just get? A 6'5, 240 pound or so DE/OLB target who has elite ability as an edge rusher is who. Think Jordan Jenkins among those currently on the roster. Carter could play as a rushing OLB in a 3-4, but it seems new DC Jeremy Pruitt is going with more of a 4 man front line look, and thus the explosive athlete likely looks to continue adding weight and power and plays full time with his hand in the dirt. The below clips are from him against North Gwinnett, home of arguably the nation's top 2015 OT recruit in Mitch Hyatt.

You can suspect what type of player we're getting when you look at that offer list. Carter is big, fast, and gets after a QB with reckless abandon. He has the ability to be a difference maker right away as a pass rusher, and perhaps win All-SEC or more as he matures. He'll play right away, though how much depends on him and his development as a player. But plain and simple, Georgia just kept one of the state's best at home, and helped keep their DL getting after their [donkeys] for the foreseeable future.

Dyshon Sims, a 6'4 or 6'5, 275 pound OT out of Lowndes, committed to Georgia way back in July after his recruiting got rolling heavy around May of last year. As you can see in Bud Elliott's article, Georgia already had a family connection with his cousin, Josh Harvey-Clemons. And as we all know, there was a definite need to add a top OT to this class. So what are we getting with Sims? Check him out for yourself...

Sims isn't ideal height, at 6'4 or 6'5 depending on which service you follow. But that, combined with his long arms, is more than enough to get the job done blocking on the edges. He shows good bend, and has quick feet for pass protection. He's among the higher rated OT recruits Richt has brought on board, and the physical tools are all there. He needs to continue adding weight and strength, without losing much quickness. 280s can work, as we saw with Kolton Houston this past year, but ideally you want your tackles closer to 300. Sims shows the frame that should comfortably handle that weight.

While highly rated, I wouldn't expect Sims to play immediately. He may, because our need at OT is that great, but you'd prefer he take a little time to reshape his body, add strength, and get accustomed to practicing against SEC DL before he has to play them on fall Saturdays. In time, we have a guy that could compete for top honors as an offensive tackle. He's not raw, but he does need some work, particularly physically. But we want quality OTs, and Sims definitely fits that bill with future NFL ability.

Well, this was certainly unexpected. Hunter Atkinson, a 6'6, 250+ pound TE out of West Hall High School near Oakwood, Ga got a last second offer from Mark Richt and his staff, and jumped all over it. The big man was previously committed to Cincinnatti and Tommy Tuberville (which if you ask me is a good sign, as Tubs always did a wonderful job identifying under the radar kids in Georgia that became good players).

Atkinson, called the "biggest sleeper" in the country by 247's recruiting analyst Rusty Mansell is an interesting pick up. At his size, he could stay at TE and become much needed quality depth behind Jay Rome. Or he could continue filling out his large frame and develop into a DL or OT. But he's a big kid that moves extremely well, and if you can find a place for a kid like that, you do it. Clips from their playoff game vs. Cartersville this past fall are below, he's #25 in white.

You can catch a deeper range of highlights at hudl. How this kid went unnoticed is beyond me watching those clips. He's not the most fluid or agile, but he moves pretty well for a man his size. His 40 time likely won't wow anyone, but the kid can move. He's got great hands, runs good routes, and even gets split wide to make plays at that size. He plays well on DL, does a good job using his hands blocking or shedding blocks, looks very strong when run blocking, and a future as a DT or OT shouldn't be a shock. But right now, there's a TE here (we'll see how his body grows once he's in Athens). He's got a good all around TE game, and wouldn't be a shock if he plays right away, as he looks much thicker and physically ready for SEC line play than Blazevich.

Mansell may well be right, as Georgia just stole a big time sleeper from under Cincinnatti's nose. Be it as a TE or a lineman, this kid is a guy you bring in and let the details work themselves out.

Georgia has gotten a lot of pretty well regarded recruits in Mark Richt's time. We landed a massive OL from Miami in Max Jean Gilles that was considered an NFL lock. We landed one of the most dynamic recruits in the country in AJ Green, and a guy Mel Kiper once called a future #1 overall pick when he was in high school with Matt Stafford. But Sony Michel just might be the highest regarded Mark Richt has landed as a head coach. We're talking about a guy who's been on the scene at a national level since the 8th grade...

Michel has elite speed, similar to Keith Marshall. But like Marshall, his high school clips show so much more. <a frameborder="0" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/x50oY6Car2w" height="315" href="http://<iframe%20width=">" target="new">His TDs as a freshman in high school would look good if we're talking about a senior tape. But the kid then missed his sophomore season to injury, before reemerging as the top RB in the state of Florida as a junior, and committing to Georgia way back last April. A south Florida kid, at a position of need for a school that routinely puts elite talent in the NFL at TB? He seemed a Miami lock on paper, but the kid chose the G and hasn't faltered in that commitment since. He went on to lead his insanely talented team to a state title (they include late offer WR/KR Isaiah McKenzie, as well as top 2015 target QB/ATH Torrance Gibson).

There really is nothing to say about this player. Think of every superlative you can about a TB, and he meets it. Speed? Check. Balance? Check. Vision? Check. Power? Check. Ability to break tackles? Check. Between the tackles? Check. On the edge? Check. Hands? Check. He may or may not be a good blocker. High school players rarely are asked to do that, but considering his offense, the talent around him, and their ability to share the ball, it's pretty safe to say he can check that box off too. With Todd Gurley leading the way, Keith Marshall, JJ Green, and Brendan Douglas backing him up, you'd think Georgia was good at RB. But Nick Chubb is ready to go, and Michel may be even better. It's an embarrassment of riches in the Bulldawg backfield come 2014, and we just get to enjoy the show. And what a show Michel can put on...

Yes, that's Bryan McClendon giving him a fist bump at the end. How McClendon plans on getting this kid the ball, we'll all just have to wait and see. But rest assured when he gets his touches, we're in for a treat. #TBUisback! Now let's RTDB.

Tomorrow is college football's National Signing Day, a huge event for fans in Bulldog Nation. In our efforts to profile every player in this coming class we now bring you a look at DB Shaq Jones
Now we get to our most recent commitment, coming to us from central Florida, DB Shaq Jones. And in central Florida as in recruiting, we often find that "it's a small world after all".

Jones was originally committed to new LB coach Kevin Sherrer as DC for South Alabama. But then Todd Grantham left for Louisville, offered the 6'1 or so, 200 pound DB, and Bobby Petrino had his first commitment since returning to the Cardinals. Of course, Grantham's departure created an opening here, and when the new staff wanted some DBs, Sherrer knew just the man he wanted to go get. Sorry Todd, we're not sorry.

As a junior, Jones played for Heritage HS in Palm Bay, FL helping at WR, DB, and returning kicks.

As a senior, he moves to nearby Merritt Island to play, but again seemed to fly under the radar as most ranked him either 2 or 3 stars. But as you can see below, it seems like Jones added a little height while keeping the speed, agility, and ball skills (you get a good taste of those ball skills on the very first highlight).

Watching those clips, it's not hard to see why Sherrer went back after his boy when he had the chance. At 6'1, Jones has tremendous size for a CB. But he doesn't lack for fluid movement or speed in getting that size. We see excellent ball skills, with good hands, the instincts to get the ball at it's highest point possible, and once he has his hands on the ball, he knows what he's doing. Not the best tackler, but good enough for a CB, he should be one to watch going forward. The young man makes plays on special teams, and while probably not a return man, I'd suspect he can help on coverage units.

And this is our new staff's guy. They liked him before, still like him, and made him a specific target on arrival to go get. You'll probably hear Tim Jennings name invoked a few times as a lightly regarded DB recruit who got a late offer, and while physically they couldn't be further apart, both just look like excellent, natural football players. While it's extremely optimistic, a Jennings-like career just might be what Jones has too.

Tomorrow is college football's National Signing Day, a huge event for fans in Bulldog Nation. In our efforts to profile every player in this coming class we now bring you a look at LB Detric Dukes
Watching Tucker's Detric Dukes evolve over the years has been a nice treat for those who follow Georgia's high school football. Tucker is a regular power, and always producing multiple top players and college prospects, so Dukes has been on the scene for a while now as a Tiger. You can watch how it began, as a sophomore playing mostly DE...

While a big sophomore, Dukes hasn't added much height or weight since, just growing into his body and getting quicker. As such, he slowly transitioned to MLB and has developed very well in that role as you can see below...

There's not much mystery to what we're getting here. He's not the biggest, or the fastest LB. He's not some raw athlete with room to grow and develop. He's about 6', 230-240, and well built. He's a very smart player, who uses his hands well shedding blockers (thanks time as a DL), and does a tremendous job diagnosing plays and making tackles. What I see almost makes me think of former LB Tony Gilbert a bit. Someone who goes a bit unnoticed, a bit unappreciated, but really knows his position and always seems to be around the ball whenever the play ends. Returning so many starters, Dukes isn't likely to get a lot of playing time early. And he may redshirt thanks to the depth, but whenever he does start contributing, expect it to be quality. He should be able to help tremendously on special teams, and like Gilbert, I wouldn't be shocked if big names fly all around him as he keeps starting and racking up tackles.

The former staff snuck this guy away from Louisville way back in the summer, and we can be thankful they didn't try to steal him back when they left. It's not a large LB class this year, but we've got a good one.

Tomorrow is college football's National Signing Day, a huge event for fans in Bulldog Nation. In our efforts to profile every player in this coming class we now bring you a look at WR Gilbert Johnson
Homestead, Fl WR Gilbert Johnson committed to Georgia way back in June. Having impressed the coaches with his film, they invited him for summer camp to get a closer look. And like it seems so often with Mark Richt recruits, that summer camp turned in an impressive performance, which turned into an offer and a quick commitment from the player. So what did the coaches see last June to warrant such love? Let's take a look...

Not bad. You can catch his senior clips here from hudl. What first jumps out at you is his size. He's a big man running around out there (listed anywhere from 6'2-6'4, and I'd lean closer to 6'4). But he also moves pretty well, and does an excellent job getting behind opposing defenses.

And these aren't scrub defenses. This is south Florida, Miami area competition, and those guys have been known to take their high school football very serious. He's playing against lots of speed, and in an offense that is well versed in the spread and throwing the football. And it's that fact that makes me think Johnson could easily play right away this coming fall.

His size makes him a factor around the red zone and going long, as does his speed. He's a good route runner and can read opposing coverages well from the looks of it. He's got good hands, and is very difficult to bring down in the open field (that's size thing again vs. smaller DBs). And at the end of his hudl clips, you see him more than willing to peel back for blocks after a play breaks down. As we've all seen with Mark Richt, being a playmaker helps you see the field, but blocking well helps you see a lot more of it. And if Johnson already has blocking down, that should only accelerate his ability to see action.

Our WR depth chart isn't in dire need, but the opportunity to provide depth will be there for Johnson, Johnson, and Williams. And this Johnson brings something the other two just can't match with his sheer size. Combine that with a roster that looks very conducive to running a lot of 3 and 4 WR looks, and we can expect a deep rotation with likely 2 of the 3 freshman, if not all 3, seeing the field come fall. Plus with that size, speed, and a willingness to hit somebody, our south Florida product should at least be able to contribute on coverage units for special teams.

2014 football commitments. Signing Day and the long dark wait until the spring G-day are just around the corner now. We've been busy bringing you all the stats and info on the Bulldogs 19 commits. Next we'll break down a future star quarterback from Goose Creek, SC.

In case you missed Macon Dawg's previous reports in June and December of 2013, Jacob Park of Stratford High School, Goose Creek, SC signed with us last June & enrolled early. He is currently listed as 6' 4' and 206 lbs. The most recent stats say he ran the 40 yard dash in 4:91. He is a Dual Threat, Pro-Style Quarterback who chose us over Alabama, Auburn, Florida State, Notre Dame, Mississippi State, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Oklahoma State, Ole Miss, Tennessee and Virginia Tech (and just wait til I tell you what he said about Alabama's recruiting style.)

He won the 2013 - 2014 Mr. South Carolina Football award over Mason Rudolph, who along with his Northwestern teammates beat Jacob Park and company in the State Championship. An accomplishment Jacob said was a shock. Previous award winners include Marcus Lattimore, Stephen Gilmore and Jadeveon Clowney. Definitely not too shabby.

Last year Macon Dawg thought he was "a bit slight for his height & needs to put on some weight." He also said Jacob has a "good, quick release and efficient throwing motion." At that time Jacob was listed as 6' 3" and 200 lbs.

Jacob has maintained a 3.4 GPA and still helped his dad rebuild a 1968 Mustang. He plans to major in either business or sports management, so he can manage his money & not get scammed should he make it to the NFL. He also lists as his favorite teacher, the First Grade Teacher that held him back a year because she felt like he needed the extra time at that level. He's been on the honor roll ever since. All in all, his non-football resume isn't too shabby either. I don't imagine he will be ineligible to play for academic reasons and I have hope that he won't find himself in an embarrassing situation that causes his dismissal or a loss of playing time.

According to the SBNation article on him a few weeks ago, he's "a consensus four-star player, ranked as the No. 5 prospect at his position and the No. 72 overall player in the 2014 class." Rivals lists him 12th, near the bottom of the list of four-star pro-style quarterbacks. 247sports.com has him in 7th. Saturday Down South has him listed as their #4. They claim there is "no obvious weakness." As usual with the various rankings, your mileage may vary.

As great as he seems to be today, we'll likely have to wait quite a while before we see him in action in an actual game. He will be waiting behind Hutson Mason, Faton Bauta, and Brice Ramsey in the depth chart for now. As stocked as our signal caller stable is, he was clear on why he picked UGA, "Coach Richt and (offensive coordinator Mike) Bobo didn't hassle me. They didn't call me every day. They sent me letters. They didn't send me a million letters like everybody else. But when they did, it was a letter that meant something. I went on a visit there, and it came down to Georgia and Alabama. Alabama was being wishy-washy. Coach Bobo told me ‘I sent two offers out this year, you and Deshaun Watson. I'm not going to offer anybody else until you make a decision.' I took that to mean that he liked me a lot. Everything fell together after that. All my friends are Georgia fans. My brother is the biggest Georgia fan that you will ever know."

I don't know which part of all that I like best. The fact that we didn't send him enough junk mail to wallpaper his bedroom, the fact that when we sent him something it was meaningful, the fact that he said Alabama was being wishy-washy or the fact that his brother is the biggest Georgia fan you'll ever know (which is probably subject to some debate around here.)

Perhaps my favorite thing is that with everything he's quoted as saying, it sure sounds like he won't be looking to transfer in two years if he doesn't get playing time. It sounds like he wants to be at Georgia and is willing to do whatever is asked of him, even if that means waiting for his chance at playing big time football in a red and black uniform.
