Remember when some fool said our recruiting was in decline because of Rodney Garner's departure? Isn't it good to laugh?

So two weeks after signing day, Georgia decided to finally finish their 2013 signing class. Talk about a surprise (Athens Banner-Herald). Most people expected Georgia to have moved on from JUCO DL Toby Johnson in the days leading up to that first Wednesday in February. Some said it was because of the ACL last season. Some said grades. Whatever it was, they were wrong, and the former Banneker standout decided to return back to the Peach State to play his collegiate football.

Johnson, a 6'4, 310 DE from Hutchinson Community College in Kansas, may need next year to redshirt his knee injury. But once healthy, he adds another big body to the DL roation. Many expected him to follow fellow Hutchinson CC DL Ben Bradley and former DL coach Rodney Garner to Auburn. Nope...

If not, then he likely redshirts, with two years to step into a spot vacated by the rising senior Smith.

For someone who said signing day, and the signing class' biggest missing piece was another DL, adding the Atlanta native in Johnson is a big boost.
Signing day was Wednesday, but that doesn't mean we still can't get excited and watch some future Dawgs in action. After all, we've got over 200 days between now and kickoff in Clemson (204 to be exact). What else are we gonna talk about?

Georgia graduated both starting safeties to the NFL in Bacarri Rambo and Shawn Williams, in addition to CBs Branden Smith and Sanders Commings exhausting their eligibility. The need to add DBs was strong in this class, and we addressed that need in quantity, as well as quality, with Brendan Langley, Tray Matthews, Quincy Mauger, Paris Bostick, JJ Green, Shaq Wiggins, and Reggie Wilkerson. In addition to that septet of high school products, DB coach Scott Lakatos will also have a pair of JUCO products joining the battle for playing time come summer in former Meridian, MS player Shaq Fluker and Kennar Johnson, originally from central Florida. You can check out Johnson from his days at East Ridge High School in Clermont, FL below.

The 6'2, 185 lb Johsnon went all the way to California, and Reedley College (which notes former Atlanta Braves manager Bobby Cox among it's alumni) for his freshman season, before coming back south to Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, where we signed him from. You can catch full game videos of MGCCC (Johnson is #4 for those Bulldogs) on youtube. They have games against Holmes (and fellow WR commit Jonathon Rumph), against Copiah-Lincoln, against East Central CC, against Pearl River, against Northeast Mississippi CC, and Jones Junior College, and also against Hinds. Yeah, that's a lot of full games, but remember, you've got 204 days until Georgia dons those silver britches against another team.

The Florida prep product could end up at CB, or at FS for the Dawgs. He shows good athleticism, speed, and ball skills, and while Mississippi junior colleges are the most advanced and talented in the country, he'll have a lot of work to do in getting technique down at CB. Still, he has the size Grantham and Lakatos enjoy out wide, with the strength and athleticism to match up man to man. Not enrolling early is a bit of a set back as far as learning the system, but Johnson will play right away. In the least, he'll provide help on coverage units in special teams play while working his way into the rotation defensively, and be in the competition to replace similarly sized Sanders Commings.

Shaq Fluker, unlike Johnson, pretty much has his position set when he walks in the door. Listed at 6'1, 192 lbs, the East Mississippi player is a SS all the way, having helped lead EMCC to the JUCO national title as a freshman. And as you might guess from his bio picture on georgiadogs.com, this is a player that enjoys hitting the opposition, hard. Just watch the film and see for yourself.

What you see in the video is a player that certainly looks thicker than that 192 pounds he's listed at. You also see a player with the ability to step in and start at SS early. Like with Johnson, he's not enrolled already, and that may be a problem as far as getting the playbook down, but the skills are certainly there. A strong tackler, Fluker's hitting is something we've kept stocked in our secondary from Thomas Davis to Greg Blue to Shawn Williams, as well as guys like Jermaine Phillips and Sean Jones. He shows a tendency to throw his shoulder in, instead of wrapping up, which can lead to some missed tackles as well as potential personal fouls, and that is something the coaches will work with him on. You also see a decent nose for the ball, as he had multiple interceptions, and shows some ability to make something happen when he gets the ball in his hands. Lakatos and Grantham preach turnovers, and Fluker should be capable of getting the ball back with picks and potential forced fumbles.

Corey Moore returns after a freshman season as the understudy of Rambo and Williams, and Connor Norman filled in admirably when Rambo was suspended early last season. Freshmen Mauger and Matthews enrolled early with the hopes of getting a head start in the competition for a starting S spot. So I wouldn't Fluker to start in Death Valley on August 31st. But he should at least play, if only as a special teams ace, and get more action on defense as he learns the playbook. But while he may not start game 1, the skills are there that he could easily be starting, and a commanding presence in the defensive backfield by mid season.

Georgia got the RB prospect from Aquinas in Augusta to flip over from a Georgia Tech commitment in the past week, and we should all be happy about not having to face this 6', 220 or so pounder. Just watch him break a tackle and go in this first clip from his junior season.

Expected to play FB, Douglas shows the speed and power to play TB considering the depth issues that we have at the position. He isn't likely to beat out Gurley or Marshall for the job, but he can more than fill the grinder role left vacant by a graduating Richard Samuel and transferring Ken Malcome.

Xander Ogletree is also expected to no longer be with the Bulldogs, and that is what the spot many believe Douglas was targeted to fill. Unlike last year's FB signee, Quayvon Hicks, Douglas is much smaller. He's got power in his frame, but to be a battering ram FB, he'll need to add considerable weight. A rusher primarily in high school, his blocking technique also needs work. Douglas will remind a lot of former FBs Brennan Southerland and Shaun Chapas. His agility and ability with the ball in his hands make him an ideal threat on pass plays out of the backfield.

He may redshirt, to continue adding weight, but with the need in the backfield, I'd suspect he plays right away in a limited role. He'll also be of value in coverage teams. After a year, he should be more than ready to compete with Hicks and walk-on Merritt Hall for FB reps, but for right now, he's a good depth as a freshman and likely little more. As good as he looks, it's made even better knowing we won't be lining up against him as the Yellow Jacket B Back.

Floyd, who was teammates with John Atkins at Hargrave last season, will have to spend the full year at the Virginia military academy getting his academics in order. But the 6'6 athlete could see the field in a big way next season.

Finding video on the former Dodge County standout isn't easy, but there's bits and pieces floating around (none linkable unfortunately). What you see on film though is a big, athletic player with loads of skill. Expected to play OLB, Floyd played both ways in high school, and was seen by some as a possible TE. His athleticism and hands are that good.

But his best attributes are getting after the QB. Floyd needs to put on a little weight, but don't be surprised if he competes for the OLB job vacated by Jarvis Jones opposite Jordan Jenkins. His technique obviously is an area for improvement, but the physical tools are something you just can't teach. After a year at Hargrave facing future major conference OL every day in practice, he should be ready to step in and provide depth. As the year goes on, he should see his role gradually increase, similar to what we saw out of Jenkins last year.

OG Brandon Kublanow is widely considered one of the best interior lineman in Georgia this year. At around 6'3, 300 pounds, the player is physical and mean, which is exactly what you want in your OL. He was also athletic enough to play DT for Walton High School, which is a great sign for mobility. You can watch his junior highlight reel below.

Kublanow, like all OL, could benefit from a redshirt season. With Georgia returning all OL from last year, he just might get that luxury. In years past, that wouldn't be the case, especially with a kid as talented as the Red Menace.

Already an adept run blocker, Kublanow has the power, and the drive to push defenders off the ball. He also is solid taking on LBs at the next level. His footwork could use some improvement, as could his consistency in staying low. Pass protection is also something he'll get to fine tune while hopefully redshirting. But this kid could work his way into the rotation this year, and will be looking to replace Lee or Burnette at one of the G spots next year.

Georgia enrolled 13 young men this semester that will be getting their first taste of SEC football this spring, and hopefully contribute come the fall. With signing day less than 48 hours away, we'll run down that baker's dozen worth of names to whet your appetite for the several more expected to join them in the 2013 class on Wednesday.

With the loss of Branden Smith and Sanders Commings from the CB spot, Scott Lakatos and Todd Grantham will be looking for new DBs ready to play this fall. Joining JJ Green this spring will be Citra, FL's Reggie Wilkerson as a freshman competing for those minutes. A 5'11 speedster, Wilkerson looks poised to make his mark in Athens.

The North Marion star played TB, WR and QB, as well as CB in high school, as you can see in the video below from his junior season.

Wilkerson will be raw as a CB, but the physical tools are all there. The speed, hips, and ball skills are exactly what you want. He is a willing hitter, although he has some work to do in tackling. His frame is slender, but appears capable of adding a good 15-20 pounds, which should help tremendously in his tackling and ability to misdirect opposing WRs off the line.

But you can't teach speed, and Wilkerson has it in abundance. His time at QB should also be a benefit when it comes to making reads, as we've seen in players like Bacarri Rambo and Sean Jones, among others. The ball skills are there, so the coaches can examine option of him playing as a return man or as a slot receiver should there be a need.

For a player like Wilkerson, enrolling early will be of immeasurable value in his freshman season. He'll have 9 months in our S&C program to add weight and strength. He'll have a spring practice to improve his technique. Coming in so raw, without that experience a redshirt season would be almost inevitable. But with the need for immediate action in the defensive backfield, enrolling this semester puts Wilkerson in line to play this fall.

With signing day less than a week away, we'll run down that baker's dozen worth of names to whet your appetite for the several more expected to join them in the 2013 class on Wednesday.

In about 5 days, everyone will go nuts about who signs where. The real work got put in months ago, and guys who committed way back when are just as important as guys who wait until the last minute. They just don't help sell. With that in mind, we wanted to introduce you to some of the important names that will be overlooked on Signing Day Wednesday morning and afternoon. With a need to replace both starting safeties from last year, playing time is there to be had in the defensive backfield, and on that note, I present to you, Quincy Mauger.

The Kell Longhorn (Marietta) was teammates with fellow recruit Brendan Langley, an over 6' CB expected to sign on the dotted line Wednesday. When Langley arrives in Athens, Mauger will be there waiting on him. After a solid senior season, that saw the defender also haul in 18 receptions for 325 yards and 1 TD on offense, the hard hitter should see action right away. If he's not playing a lot at S, he'll at least be providing special teams work. But as a defensive back, he brings a lot to the table. Just see his junior highlight reel below...

You can also watch full games of Kell (Mauger is wearing #20, Langley #21) against Pope, Gainesville, and Riverwood, thanks to the beautiful interwebs. Those always give you a better feel for a player, warts and all, than highlight reels do, but they are long (about 2 hours each).

Mauger has the physical tools, decent size at 6', and over 200, likely close to 215 or 220 by the time the season starts this fall. He has decent speed, although nothing electric. So he won't need a redshirt to get bigger, stronger, or faster before contributing. Kell is a top HS, that plays against the best in the state on a regular basis, so combine that with spring ball, and he should be well acclimated to competing against the athletes you'll see on a week in, week out basis in the SEC.

In coverage, Mauger shows a solid backpedal, and ability to read the QB before breaking on the ball. He appears comfortable in both man and zone coverages, and isn't afraid to come up in run support. His tackling isn't on par with a Blue, Davis, or Williams, but it's effective enough. And it should get better as he gets stronger and physically matures. He shows a good nose for the ball, and the hands to make a pick when the ball is in his area. He wasn't the highest rated S in the state, but there are no significant flaws there.

One thing at S though, is they tend to be the QB of the defense. They set the coverage, help align players, and have to make reads. At the HS level, you simply don't face the offensive complexity (except when facing a certain team out of Atlanta) you're going to see at the collegiate level. Freshman DBs often make mistakes, and in that position, a mistake often leads to points. That's where the early enrollment helps most, to correct those mistakes before they occur on fall Saturdays.

Mauger will join fellow Atlanta area product Tray Matthews in the competition to take over from Rambo and Williams. There is a good chance one of the two ends up starting in Clemson, although the safe money is on Matthews. But Mauger looks ready to play, although growing pains will certainly be there. At worst, we've got a solid special teamer that will develop and provide depth in the defensive backfield.

With signing day less than a week away, we'll run down that baker's dozen worth of names to whet your appetite for the several more expected to join them in the 2013 class on Wednesday.

Georgia already has one pass catcher from the Palmetto State as a new member of the Dawgs. He'll be joined this spring by another, Tramel Terry. As you hopefully have already read from member Dawg Haus

, the Goose Creek, SC product is an extremely versatile athlete. He's an explosive offensive weapon that wavered a bit in recruiting, but ultimately remained true to the commitment he made very early on in the process last March.

Terry suffered a setback in his hopes of exploding onto the scene in his home state against Clemson and South Carolina this fall, when he tore his ACL playing in the prestigious Shrine Bowl. The annual All-Star game between the best from North Carolina and South Carolina was played in the middle of December, and with modern advances in knee surgeries, an 8 month recovery time isn't impossible. That would mean he could be ready by fall camp and perhaps the season opener on August 31st in the Upstate, but it is way too premature in his recovery process to expect anything other than a redshirt season.

Whenever he does take the field though, Terry has an ability to impact the game from all over the field, and is an extremely capable offensive threat. Somewhat similar to Harvin, he's not a big receiver in terms of height, but he has a thick, powerful frame that allows him to sometimes play TB, in addition to work out wide. You can see those skills on the first clip of his junior season highlight reel below.

His senior highlights show more of the same; big play after big play be it catching a pass as a WR or taking a pitch as a TB. The kid is one tremendous playmaker with speed, strength, agility, everything really.

First, what not to love about Terry, because there's very little in that category. You don't see much in terms of blocking. But when you consider his skills, he wasn't really asked to do much blocking in high school and with his power, provided he's willing and teachable, that is a skill that can be taught very easily and very quickly. He'll also likely need to fine tune his route running, which is the case for almost every high school receiver, although his seems more advanced than most. And lastly, his knee injury will keep him out of spring practice and at least the G Day game, so it'll be a while before we get to enjoy watching him in red, black, and silver britches.

Now, what to love about Terry? Everything else? The kid shows it all. He's got tremendous speed, and the ability to accelerate through his cuts that is rare even in high level athletes. He's got good vision, and the quick hips to make a minor cut before leaving defenders in his dust. He's got power in a stout frame that allows him to break arm tackles, in addition to the speed and agility to juke anyone that goes low. There is a reason all the recruiting services rated him as a 4 star, and one of the premier talents in South Carolina.

In addition to what he's able to do with the ball in his hands, my favorite part about Terry is those hands themselves. Like AJ Green, who came to Athens out of Summerville just a short run from Terry's Goose Creek, you see a wonderful ability to go snag the football. Terry uses his hands extremely well, and gets the football at it's highest point. His hands look sure, and strong, and you don't expect drops to be much of an issue with the way he catches the football. Not to put too much hype on him early, but the film shows all the makings of a premier pass catcher going forward, and a guy who just might be joining Green in a few years in Hawai'i at the NFL Pro Bowl.

We saw Mike Bobo expand his playbook to include some pistol this past year. Terry is the type of athlete who can excel in such an inventive system. He can take quick jets to the edge, turn and go. Expect to see him, whenever he's healthy enough to take the field, utilized in several capacities. He can work those quick jets out of the pistol, wildcat, or more conventional formations as we've seen Branden Smith used. But he has a power to break tackles you never saw out of the slender Smith. He's got the ability to be a dynamite kick returner in speed and power, or standout punt returner with his ability to make the first man miss in space. You've got a player who can work across the board offensively, as a part time TB, slot receiver, or split end. The sky is the limit for Terry, with just a matter of time and good health before we get to cheer him on as he races towards the end zone.
