Georgia will face its stiffest competition of the young season on Saturday when they face San Diego State in the second round of the Wooden Legacy Tournament. Georgia trailed for the first 30 minutes of Friday’s game but recovered in time to defeat Cal State Fullerton 64-57. The Aztecs ran out to a 49-14 lead over Sacramento State and never looked back with an 89-52 win.
The Bulldogs come into the game undefeated but with some concerns. They have struggled with turnovers throughout averaging 17.8 per game. Georgia turned the ball over 15 times in Friday’s win over the Titans but only four of those came after halftime.
Point guard Turtle Jackson rebounded from a subpar first half to pace the Bulldogs with 16 points. Yante Maten scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half including eight straight during a key stretch when Georgia took the lead. Maten battled foul trouble early on and the Bulldogs struggled to get him involved in the offense.
Georgia could benefit by getting Tyree Crump going but he has had a difficult time finding an offensive rhythm of late. Crump scored nine points in the Bulldogs’ come-from-behind win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi but was just 2-for-10 from the field. He had two points in Friday’s win over the Titans but is just 2-for-16 from the field and 1-for-12 from three-point range.
San Diego State enters the game with a 4-1 record with their loss coming at Arizona State. They are led by senior forward Malik Pope who is averaging 16.8 points and 8.5 rebounds. The Aztecs feature five different players who are averaging in double figures scoring and are shooting 36 percent as a team from three-point range.
