Wooden Legacy 2017: Georgia opens against Cal State Fullerton

Georgia hits the road for the first time this season to take part in the Wooden Legacy Tournament

After two straight shaky wins, Georgia heads west to take part in the Wooden Legacy Tournament. Up first for the Bulldogs is a matchup with Cal State Fullerton.

Georgia defeated Bryant soundly in the season opener and built big leagues against USC-Upstate and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi only to watch them slip away. The Bulldogs recovered in time to win both matchups but need to improve their focus going forward.

Turnovers have been the biggest issue. Georgia has piled up 56 through the first three games which equates to an 18.7 average per game. Conversely, the Bulldogs have recorded 43 assists and have a 0.77 assist to turnover ratio through the first three games and that is something that will have to improve as the competition gets tougher.

Yante Maten is off to a wonderful start averaging 20.7 points and 13.0 rebounds. Freshman Rayshaun Hammonds is averaging 15 points and 5.7 rebounds while shooting a blistering 72 percent from the floor.

The backcourt has been a bit of a mixed bag. Turtle Jackson scored in double figures in each of the first two games but was largely glued to the bench down the stretch against TAMCC. Jackson is averaging 9.0 points, 3.0 assists and 1.3 turnovers while shooting 38 percent from three-point range. Jackson’s biggest concern comes on the defensive end.

E’Torrion Wilridge started the first three games but has attempted just 2.7 field goals per game. Wilridge’s size gives the Bulldogs some defensive flexibility in the starting unit but he has yet to hit a three-pointer and is averaging 2.7 turnovers per game.

Guard Jordan Harris made his season debut against TAMCC and was on the court during crunch time. It wouldn’t be terribly surprising to see him play a bigger role at some point.

Cal State Fullerton was the surprise team of the Big West last season but are off to a bit of a slow start thanks to a heavy schedule early. The Titans are 1-2 but have losses to then No. 10 USC and No. 21 St. Mary’s. They earned their first victory of the season last time out defeating Bethesda 77-35.

Points have been hard to come by for the Titans through their first three games. They are averaging 58.7 points per game and shooting just 36 percent from the field and 20 percent from three-point range. They are led by 6-7 forward Jackson Rowe who is averaging 12.5 ppg.

Thursday’s winner will advance to meet the winner of the San Diego State/Sacramento State matchup.
