Georgia snags commitment from elite linebacker Kristopher Jones

Another day, another big time defensive recruit picking the Red and Black.

This time it was four star Virginia linebacker Kristopher Jones (Fairfax HS), who selected the Bulldogs over fellow finalists Florida and Michigan State. Jones also counted offers from schools including Auburn, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Oklahoma.

Jones has sort of a long frame at 6’3, 220 and should be able to play heavier. He has elite arm length but is going to need to develop upper body size and strength.

Jones does have good get off speed as an outside rusher, with the potential to play either standing up as a strong side linebacker or with his hand in the dirt on third down. He does have a bit of a tendency to take on blockers with his shoulder rather than using his hands to deliver a blow and control the engagement. That’s a technique issue that’s fixable. The size/speed combo Jones has, however, can’t be taught.

Jones’s speed off the edge makes him hard to block, but I also like that he doesn’t shy away from contact and fights to the ball through traffic. I’m also intrigued by Jones’ ability to drop into coverage. While he doesn’t look incredibly smooth in coverage in these highlights, the feet and overall athleticism are clearly there.

With this commitment Glenn Schumann is set to add the #1, #6, and #9 linebackers in the 247Sports Composite rankings to his position group in this class. For a defense that reloads more than rebuilds, that’s an exciting haul. Separate from the rankings, it’s a group that may have as much athletic upside as any group in the country.

Go ‘Dawgs!!!
