Let’s start the week with a confession.
We have not paid as much attention as we should have on this site to what has been a sterling season for Manny Diaz’s Georgia tennis team. That ends today, however. The Tennis ‘Dawgs already capped off an undefeated 12-0 SEC campaign that allowed Coach Diaz to claim his 29th SEC title, a mark unlikely to ever be eclipsed by any coach.
Last week the squad notched impressive victories over Florida Gulf Coast and Oklahoma to advance to the NCAA super regional round. Then this weekend the #6 seeded Bulldogs downed #11 seed Harvard 4-2 to advance to the NCAA quarterfinals in Lake Nona, Florida beginning on Thursday. The decisive victory over the school sometimes labeled “the University of Georgia of the northeast” sets up a contest with the #3 ranked Ohio State Buckeyes, who arrived in the quarters by beating Louisville 4-0 and downing Arizona State 4-2.
Coach Ty Tucker’s team will provide a stiff challenge for the Red and Black, having compiled a 32-2 record on the season and emerged victorious in their last 17 consecutive matches. The winner of this match would face off in the semifinals against either #1 seed Texas or #9 seed South Carolina. Kentucky, the #4 seed, is on the other side of the bracket. Until later…
Go ‘Dawgs!!!
