National Signing Day Central: Champions Wanted

Syndication: Online Athens Joshua L. Jones / USA TODAY NETWORK

It’s National Signing Day! Even in a college football world transformed by the transfer portal, this is the day when future championship rosters are built.

The Bulldogs currently have 27 public commitments for 2024 and sit atop the 247Sports recruiting rankings. Alabama and Ohio State are in second and third, and with 22 commitments each have more room to add blue chip recruits. They may narrow the gap, but I still expect the Red and Black to be your mythical recruiting national champions for this cycle.

Will today include a lot of fireworks? It seems unlikely. The recent decommitment of top quarterback prospect Dylan Raiola is a cautionary lesson that no recruit is 100% a lock until he signs on the line that is dotted. But there isn’t a whole lot of smoke around additional defections.

The Dawgs also don’t have a ton of space left for additional pickups. The Red and Black have been active in the transfer portal already, securing a commitment from former Vanderbilt receiver London Humphrey. That being said, I expect the Athenians could add 2-3 additional high school or JUCO players. I’d keep a particular eye on the defensive line, where Coach Scott has been looking hard to add big, athletic interior tackles.

We’ll keep a running list as the paperwork rolls in, as well as breaking down the class as a whole as it takes shape. This will be the headquarters for all the news, speculation, rumor and innuendo throughout the day.

So strap in and stay tuned. It’s going to be a big day.

Go ‘Dawgs!!!

Official Signings

Chauncey Bowens, RB. Big, bruising tailback (5’11, 220) ranked #16 at the position in the 247Sports Composite rankings.

Dwight Phillips, RB. The lightning to Bowens’ thunder, Phillips has elite track speed and excellent vision.

Colton Heinrich, TE. The Fort Lauderdale tight end isn’t the most highly-rated recruit in this class but claimed offers from most of the SEC before pledging to the Red and Black all the way back in May. He has good size and moves in the open field, and is an solid blocker.
