Friday ‘Dawg Bites: The Better Late than Never Edition

Sorry I’m tardy to the party, but I still be tryppin’...

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: NOV 26 Georgia Tech at Georgia
Do it again, KM#2

Everyone has a favorite Georgia - Georgia Tech memory. Tekkies might even have a few, too. The 1971 iteration of “Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate” always stands out to me because it was when I first became aware of The Georgia Bulldogs, even though we still lived in Texas.

On that Thanksgiving night so long ago, the Georgia - Georgia Tech game was the 2nd game of ABC’s double-header coverage, the first being the famous “Game of the Century” with Nebraska beating Oklahoma in Norman.

Now, back then my mom was actually a Tech fan because as a young recent high-school graduate she moved from Screven County to Atlanta to get away from small-town Georgia and see what else was “out there.” Mom worked at the old downtown branch of Citizens and Southern Bank and may have had a “date or two” with some Tech guys who, thankfully, she never had more than a date or two with. Mom also went to a lot of Atlanta Crackers game back in the day as well. Baseball was her first sports love and that never faded. Anyway, once we moved to Watkinsville in ‘73, mom “got right” and became a Dawgs fan forever (although she still had a soft spot in her heart for Tech. Mom had a bigger heart than anyone).

Back to the ‘71 game. I don’t remember much, but I do remember that by the time the game began to grow long-in-the-tooth, I was rooting for the Dawgs to prevail and in the end, they put together a final soul-crushing drive to whip Tech as time was running out, largely because of Andy Johnson’s heroics and true-sophomore Jimmy “The Greek Streak” Poulos’ 1-yard TD plunge. (Hyperlink is from Facebook. Hopefully you can open it). I wish someone could post more highlights from that game on YouTube. I would love to go back and relive the whole thing again.

Anyway, Dawgs win 28-24. This capped off a 10-1 regular season and turned this 10-year-old into a lifelong Dawg. Our only loss was to Auburn. I hate Auburn.

So, back to the present day. Georgia is a prohibitive favorite (-24.5) to put a whuppin’ on the Humble Bumbles tomorrow night. Tech will be up for this game, no question. They’re a little bit dangerous, too. The Jackets have better coaching now with Brent Key at the helm and ex-Georgia assistant Buster Faulkner at offensive coordinator, and some guys at skill positions who can hurt you. It’s been well documented all week that they are extremely vulnerable on defense, particularly against the pass, behind an offensive line that is improving but not quite #1 according to this writer. Personally, I think our run blocking is a bit inconsistent at times, but pass blocking is where they truly stand out. I would love to see us run for a couple of C-notes and just control the scoreboard and the clock.

Brent Key knows he has a tall task on Saturday, but he’s giving his squad a punchers chance, I think. He was hired after the Geoff Collins Experience essentially melted quicker than a Waffle House cheese omlette. Tech so wants to beat us and Key has proclaimed that is their goal. Will it happen tomorrow? A lot of weird stuff would have to happen. A lot.

So, Tech hates us. We hate them. We also dominate them and should do so again. Last year’s game got off to a slow, sluggish start before we pulled away. I am fully expecting a similar type game tomorrow night, but Georgia has too much talent and depth not to ultimately take control of this game.

So, how you feeling about it all?

Have a happy Black Friday, everyone. If you’re like me, happiness on Black Friday means staying at home, eating leftovers, and never stepping foot into a mall.

As Always, GO DAWGS!
