College Football Returns...Sort of...

Zeke Bratkowski - Georgia

If I’m being honest, it kind of snuck up on me...

Here I was, just watching the summer days pass by. Still basking in National Championship glory while baking in the blazing July and August heat... the only thing drawing my attention away from the Kelee Ringo Pick 6 loop I’ve spent the last 7 months enjoying was another increasingly frequent mid-afternoon downpour. Then I looked up and college football season was back... sort of.

It’s time once again for Week 0. For those of you who’ve yet to knock the rust off, that’s Week Zero. Zero — as in the number of wins Georgia Tech will have against Power 5 teams this season.

Week 0. It isn’t the entrée. It’s not even the appetizer. It’s like when you stick your finger in the banana pudding in the refrigerator while your Mama isn’t looking. It’s just enough to remind you how awesome it is, but it has no chance of satisfying your raw animal hunger.

But ready or not, it’s here...so let’s get this season started the right way:

It isn’t exactly the most riveting slate of games you could ask for. But for the truly sick among you, I say “Welcome! We’ve been waiting for you and we have some viewing suggestions!”:

SATURDAY NOON

Nebraska Cornhuskers vs. Northwestern Wildcats (Dublin, Ireland) - 12:30 PM - FOX

The fine people of Ireland really deserve better than a ride on the Scott Frost Hot Seat Express™. And barring any surprises, they probably deserve better than Northwestern, too. Both teams are bottom half of the Big 10 at best and bottom of the Big Ten West at worst. Still, I’ll admit there’s a little intrigue emanating from the game being played in Dublin and the rarity of a Week 0 conference matchup.

SATURDAY AFTERNOON

Wyoming Cowboys at Illinois Fighting Illini - 4:00 PM - B1G Network

I really have only one justification for selecting this game for the afternoon slot: I just can’t get enough Bielema. We’ve missed you, Bert. It’s great to have you back big fella.

SATURDAY EVENING

Florida A&M Rattlers @ North Carolina Tar Heels - 8:15 PM - ACC Network

I’m not saying that FAMU will be in this one late... or even that it won’t be out of reach early. All I’m saying is that Mack Brown is replacing Sam Howell with a true freshman and that the Rattlers are coming off a very solid 9-3 season in 2021. If it weren’t for the behemoth that Deion is building at Jackson State, they’d probably be favorites in the SWAC. So if we’re lucky, this one could at least be interesting.

SATURDAY LATE

Vanderbilt Commodores @ Hawaii Warriors - 10:30 PM - CBSSN

If the boys from Nashville can’t pull off a win against the Warriors, Elon in Week 1 may be Vanderbilt’s last shot at a win this season. Worst case scenario, they get a nice trip to Honolulu out of it and we get our first late night football of the season.

That’s all for now, folks. See you next week for your Week 1 TV Schedule and the true start to the season.

Until then...

GOOOO DAWGS!!!
