To the surprise of essentially no one, Georgia’s season-opening September 4th matchup with the Clemson Tigers has been announced as a 7:30, prime time kickoff on ABC.
The battle between presumptive top five teams is the no-brained top game of college football’s opening Saturday, perhaps rivaled only by Miami taking on Alabama in Atlanta for the Chick-Fil-A kickoff game.
While it won’t affect either team’s conference title hopes, and absent a blowout one way or the other isn’t likely to seriously alter either team’s playoff hopes by itself, the game sets up as a big barometer of Clemson’s ability to replace Trevor Lawrence and a host of other playmakers, and Georgia’s ability to reload on defense and progress in year two of Todd Monken’s offense.
It also appears that the game will be one of the first major matchups played with a full stadium since the conclusion of the 2019 season, creating a raucous atmosphere that’s sure to be memorable no matter how things turn out.
And it’s only 108 days away! Until later...
