Today we should be gathering with friends under thousands of tailgate tents scattered around Athens. We should be reconnecting with friends and family over fried chicken and pimento cheese and that thing Aunt Connie makes with the crushed potato chips. We don’t know what it is, but we always eat just a little scoop of it anyway to be polite.
In a perfect world, this is the day I was hoping three months ago would be my daughter’s first trip to Sanford Stadium. She was despondent when I told her on the day of the Sugar Bowl that it just wasn’t feasible to get to New Orleans by kickoff, but I promised her the next time the Georgia Bulldogs played football, I’d get her there.
I guess I’ve still got time to make good on that promise. Because it’s not a perfect world.
If it were we’d be getting our first look at quarterback Jamie Newman and a host of talented freshmen in red and black, and seeing what recruits showed up for the day, and going back for a second helping of Aunt Connie’s potato chip surprise then scraping it into the trash when no one is looking.
Instead, we’re all still hunkered down, and not in a good way.
The best we can do on this day is to tune in at 2:00 p.m. to the SEC Network for a replay of last year’s September 21st Notre Dame game. Kirby Smart is supposed to be providing some commentary and the Bulldog Radio Network crew will be doing a Facebook Live if you’re interested.

It’s not perfect. But it’s the best any of us can do under the circumstances, which is sort of the theme for 2020 so far. So grab a snack and a beverage and join us to soak in the atmosphere of Athens, Georgia on a Saturday night. I don’t mean to spoil anything, but I suspect that just like a normal G Day we’re probably going to win this one no matter what. Until later...
Go ‘Dawgs!!!
