Kirby Smart’s recruiting class just keeps getting better all the time. After the announcement that one of his top junior defensive backs would be coming back in 2020 we got the news that arguably the top defensive back recruit in the 2020 class would be joining the Red and Black.
Cornerback Kelee Ringo of Saguaro High in Scottsdale, Arizona announced today that as suspected he already signed with Georgia over finalists that included Oregon, Texas, and Alabama. Ringo is the #8 prospect in the country regardless of position according to the 247Sports Composite as well as the #1 ranked cornerback recruit.
If you’ve seen him play it’s easy to understand why. I hesitate to say that any incoming freshman is a day one starter given the amount of talent already on the roster in Athens. That being said, Ringo will be impossible to keep off the field in 2020 if he stays healthy. At 6’2, 205 pounds Ringo has the frame to add more muscle and actually play closer to 215, despite also having 10.5 100 meters track speed. When NFL personnel folks talk about the size/speed ratio they’re looking for, this is what it looks like.
Ringo’s size and speed make him a match for any receiver in man coverage. He’s extremely aggressive one-on-one, which should translate well to Georgia’s defense. Ringo is also a solid tackler with exceptional instincts and solid ball skills. While he’ll need to develop the discipline to avoid penalties at the college level, it’s easy to imagine him developing under Charlton Warren into a true lockdown corner.
Ringo’s commitment gives the Athenians 21 commits for this class and inches then just a little closer to Alabama and Clemson in the 247 recruiting rankings. Those three schools have now effectively separated themselves from the pack, and the ‘Dawgs are the only one of the three with substantial space left to sign more players. Until later...
Go ‘Dawgs!!!
