Kirby Smart got his biggest win of the year on the recruiting trail this afternoon. Richard LeCounte is coming back to Athens for one more year as a Bulldog.

LeCounte finished the season with two key interceptions in Georgia’s 26-14 Sugar Bowl win over Baylor. Some speculated that LeCounte would see that performance as a perfect high note to go out on, but the former 5-Star Safety evidently wants to show more of his skills to scouts before heading to the NFL.

LeCounte finally began realizing his potential in his third season under Kirby Smart. As one of his first blue-chip recruits as Georgia’s Head Coach, Smart always seemed to take a special interest in LeCounte, and mics often caught him yelling at LeCounte over missed assignments and over run plays. This season, LeCounte became a key cog in the back end of Georgia’s defense, and seemed to be in the right place in the key moments down the stretch.

LeCounte had 61 total tackles with four interceptions and forced two fumbles during the 2019 season. With his return, and the emergence of Lewis Cine in the Sugar Bowl, Georgia’s back end will feature the former #2 and #3 overall safeties according to 247 Sports. With the incredible amount of young talent Smart and his staff have gathered in Athens, LeCounte’s biggest value to Georgia may be as a leader who can model the right work habits to his young teammates.

As always, GO DAWGS!!!
