Five star Linebacker Mekhail Sherman Picks The ‘Dawgs!

It’s been a few days since Kirbyy Smart added a blue chip recruit to his ever-growing stable of football talent.

Or at least, it had been.

Tht all changed with the announcement this evening that Washington DC outside linebacker Mekhail Sherman is officially committing to the Red and Black. Sherman has been rumored for some time to favor the ‘Dawgs over offers from the likes of Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Michigan, Ohio State, and Texas. Some even thought that he might make things official at G Day.

But no matter the date, this is a huge pickup for the Bulldog coaches. Sherman is the top ranked player in the District of Columbia, the #2 outside linebacker, and the #11 overall prospect in America. Commitments really don’t get much bigger than this.

Sherman is a physical specimen. At 6’3, 234 pounds he already looks like an SEC linebacker. He also ran a 4.53 verified 40 at The Opening finals as a sophomore, and clocked a 33 inch vertical jump at the same event. That sort of explosion from a guy who could easily play at 245 pounds is rare indeed. While it’s never a fair comparison, Sherman’s sophomore effort shows a combination of length, flexibility and speed that reminds me a little of Roquan Smith. He did miss his junior season with an ACL injury, and it will be interesting to see if he flashes the same explosiveness post-injury.

It’s also worth noting that Sherman is a high school teammate of the nation’s #3 wide receiver, Rakim Jarrett (a current LSU commit). While the two haven’t indicated any affinity for a package deal, Georgia is recruiting Jarrett and Sherman’s commitment probably doesn’t hurt.

Sherman’s pledge puts Georgia at #9 in 247Sports’ 2020 class rankings. But it’s worth noting that Georgia and Notre Dame are the only schools in the top 10 with fewer than 10 commitments (Georgia has 8, every school in the top 5 has at least 12). It’s shaping up as another furious finish for Kirby & Co, Until later...

Go ‘Dawgs!!!
