Backup QB Mathis Hospitalized

Kristin Bradshaw/UGA Sports Communications

Some scary yet hopeful news from the quarterback position room hit Georgia on Thursday night as news trickled out that backup quarterback D’wan Mathis was in the ICU at Piedmont Hospital in Athens to remove a cyst from his brain after undergoing emergency surgery according to multiple media outlets.

According to DawgNation.com, Mathis had experienced severe sinus pain, a factor in the cyst. Mathis’ father also said that he was in the ICU as a precautionary measure.

No timetable is currently known on the status of Mathis for fall camp. Mathis, of course will be compared side by side to Justin Fields given that he at the last minute spurned tOSU after Fields transferred there in the offseason.

It goes without saying that any news of Georgia’s scholarship QBs having to miss any time likely causes some angst among the coaching staff, a big reason why such an effort was made to bring Stetson Bennett back to Athens.

First and foremost, however, the biggest concern is the health of Mathis.

Until later...
