The Bulldog coaching staff had a lot of high profile recruits in town this weekend, including a couple of 2020 quarterbacks. One of those apparently saw everything he needed to pull the trigger on a huge commitment.
Jacksonville (Mandarin HS) signal caller Carson Beck decommitted from Alabama a few weeks back and chose the Red and Black today over offers from not just the Tide but also Florida, Miami, FSU, and Penn State. The #3 pro-style quarterback for the class of 2020, Beck was selected as Florida’s Mr. Football after leading his team to an 8A state title as a junior in his first year as a full time starter. The 6’4, 225 pound standout threw for 3546 yards and 39 touchdowns, completing 59% of his passes.
This is huge news for the UGA staff. Beck is an elite QB prospect with the tools to compete at any school. With Jake Fromm a rising junior, the Bulldogs were looking at a competition to replace him in the next couple of years. Four star 2019 signee Dwan Mathis is an intriguing prospect who’ll certainly be a part of that competition, but Beck is a real contender for the job as well.
Beck is a solid pocket passer with good arm strength. He’s accurate on short and intermediate passes, in part due to excellent mechanics for a kid who’s just now starting to concentrate on football full-time. I expect both his decision making and touch will only improve as he plays more football.
In summary, it’s never a bad thing to fill a position of need with one of the nation’s best at the position in question. That’s precisely what the ‘Dawgs have done.
