Georgia 87, SMU 85: ‘Dawgs outlast ‘Stangs in one for the books

NCAA Basketball: Georgia at Arizona State Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

It turns out you can break even the wildest Mustangs if you’re willing to wear them down.

Georgia led for much of the first half, then overcame a deficit to tie things up at the end of a seesaw second half. The ‘Dawgs then got just enough to notch a big double overtime win over visiting SMU tonight.

It was freshman guard Sahvir Wheeler who hit a driving layup at the end of the first overtime to keep it going and another to clinch the win. He was placed in position to do so by another stellar night from Rayshaun Hammonds, who led all Bulldogs with 21 points. Anthony Edwards chopped in 16 and Tyree Crump 12. Jordan Harris returned from his none game suspension with 9 points, including an authoritative dunk to end the first half.

Georgia (7-3) will move on to host Georgia Southern on Monday. After a bad loss to Arizona State coming off the break the Red and Black needed this win over a solid SMU team. It’s the kind of win you can point to in March, assuming there aren’t too many negatives to point to first. Until later....

Go ‘Dawgs!!!
