New offensive line coach Matt Luke went down to South Georgia and found himself another recruit.
South Effingham offensive lineman Austin Blaske has been committed to North Carolina State until this morning. His other offers were from the likes of Cincinnati, Memphis, Georgia Southern, and Vanderbilt. The 6’5, 278 pounder is a three star prospect according to the 247Sports composite and a four star according to 247’s own rankings. He’s not going to help the average ranking of recruits in this class.
But Blaske is an intriguing prospect. He’s also a talented wrestler, and has great upper body strength and a bit of a nasty streak. He’s not too bulky at this point and once he’s free to stop keeping his weight down for wrestling purposes could easily play at 300+ pounds. While I wouldn’t read too much into it, this might indicate a shift by Coach Luke away from the human aircraft carriers who currently make up the UGA offensive line. That’s not official policy, but just something to keep an eye on.
Again, this commitment isn’t likely to really blow anyone away. But it reminds me a little of the Solomon Kindley pickup in 2017, a guy who coaches really like who could be physically developed into a solid player. If that happens here it will have been a scholarship well-spent.
Barring any surprises, this should be the last commit of the day. We’ll be back with a wrap up of the day later this evening. Until then...
