We’re only two days away from Early Signing Day. Kirby Smart and his staff just completed a big weekend of visits that saw several of the top 100 prospects in college football come to Athens and get a feel for what life in red and black would be like.
We’re now headed into the “dead period”, a horribly misnamed NCAA construction. From here on into January schools cannot have prospective players on their campuses and cannot go out to see recruits in their homes or schools. However coaches can still have phone calls, texts, emails, social media messages, and FaceTime/Video call interactions with prospects. So it ain’t really all that dead.
Still, most of the recruiting hay is in the barn, so to speak. Which makes this an excellent time for those of you who follow recruiting to go on record with your UGA recruiting predictions. I’ll start with a handful of my own.
- If Georgia signs a second tailback after Californian Kendall Milton it will be Colquitt County’s Daijun Edwards, not Houston five star Zachary Evans or Callaway (Hogansville) five star Tank Bigsby.
- Georgia will land five star defensive end Jordan Burch out of South Carolina. Burch has been trending away from the home state schools for awhile. While some think LSU is the team to beat I think distance from home will be a factor. I don’t have any sort of inside information here. But I think the chance to play in a Bulldog defense that’s gotten a reputation as perhaps the best in the nation while staying within two and a half hours of home will be appealing.
- Georgia does sign a second quarterback (don’t ask me who). The Bulldog coaches have been very active late in the recruiting cycle trying to find a second signal caller to add with Jacksonville four star Carson Beck (an early enrollee). Coaches had been working on Ohio State recruit CJ Stroud out of Rancho Cucomonga, California and Lake Travis, Texas star Hudson Card (a Texas Longhorn commit). I don’t think it’s likely either of those guys signs with the ‘Dawgs (though you count Kirby out at your own peril). My best guess is that efforts are now focused on Woodward QB Michael Wright, a former UCF commit. Wright’s throwing mechanics need work, but he is an impressive threat in the running game who I could see running the kind of offense that you can’t really run when Jake Fromm is your quarterback and losing him to injury would be an utter disaster.
- It won’t be over on Signing Day. Several of the Bulldogs’ top targets (like five star Las Vegas athlete Darnell Washington) will send in their paperwork this week but won’t announce publicly until all-star games around New Year’s. So while Wednesday is a big day, it isn’t the only day to be aware.
So those are a few of mine. If you ain’t scared, feel free to post your Signing Day predictions in the comments. And...
Go ‘Dawgs!!!
