Just before this game got underway I wrote:
And I’m still waiting to see that. A Bulldog secondary which we thought might be a strength this season got carved up like a Christmas goose by a true freshman quarterback for most of the first half, surrendering 205 passing yards and two touchdowns to Volunteer signal caller Brian Maurer, making his first start. It is worth noting that 73 of those came on a (stop me if you’ve heard this one) blown coverage by DJ Daniel that went to Jake Fromm and Trey Hill’s fellow Warner Robinsian Marquez Calloway. Also noteworthy is that Maurer was 6 of 12 on Tennessee’s first three drives but 4 of 9 on the last three and looked a good bit less comfortable doing so. Let’s hope that holds.
Jake Fromm by contrast is having a quietly phenomenal night. The junior is 16 of 20 through the air for 195 yards and two touchdowns.
The ‘Dawgs will get the ball to start the second half with a chance to firmly take control and put the first quarter or so’s unpleasantness behind them. Take that chance, boys. For all our sakes.
Go ‘Dawgs!!!
