If your Georgia Bulldogs are preparing to open the 2018 season without many of the stars who paved the way for 2017's success, you could probably use a drink. I can help you with that.
There’s no getting around the fact that the 2017 senior class of the University of Georgia football team will go down in history as one of the great groups in recent memory. Together they made the decision to buy into Kirby Smart’s approach. Many of them turned down millions in the NFL to come back and try it out.
They were handsomely rewarded for their faith, and we were rewarded right along with him with a season for the ages.
I cannot say for certain which departing senior will be hardest to replace. I think I could make a compelling case for Roquan Smith. Dominick Sanders certainly came up big when needed. Lorenzo Carter and Devon Bellamy made key plays time and again.
But if the question is which former Bulldogs will fans miss the most I would be hard-pressed to name better candidates than Sony Michel and Nick Chubb. The dynamic duo overcame injuries, non-sensical offensive play-calling, and a coaching change, and wound up persevering all the way into the UGA record books, and a handsome NFL pay day. I cannot think of anyone who deserves the success more.
Now the mantle passes to a new group of UGA tailbacks, led by D’Andre Swift. It’s a tall order replacing the most productive pair of running backs in recent Red and Black history.
But I think he's up to the task. Sure, Jake Fromm will be the leader of the UGA offense, and he will lean heavily on a veteran receiving corps.
But Kirby Smart isn't about to stop wanting to run the dang ball. D’Andre Swift will get his just desserts.
And how should you toast to to Swift getting his fair share of touches? With a Swift Justice. Start by muddling three mint leaves, a quarter of a fresh, ripe Georgia peach, and two teaspoons of sugar in a highball glass. Dash in an ounce and a half of quality vodka, then top with soda water. Enjoy.
Everyone have a great night and drink responsibly. Let’s also use this as the open thread for Thursday night college football action.
