Georgia seeking season sweep of Tennessee

Bulldogs need to build momentum for next week’s conference tournament

Georgia will wrap up the 2018 regular season Saturday evening in Knoxville against Tennessee. The Bulldogs are looking to complete a sweep of the Volunteers and to head into next week’s SEC Tournament with some momentum.

Georgia enters Saturday’s game 16-13 overall with a 7-10 conference mark. Their tournament hopes have all but expired and will likely need to win the SEC Tournament to make the NCAA Tournament field.

The Bulldogs suffered a back breaking 61-60 loss at home Wednesday to Texas A&M in which they let a late lead slip away in the game’s final moments. As usual, Yante Maten led the way with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Georgia had a chance to win it at the end but Mark Fox elected not to call a time out to set up a final possession with 12 seconds remaining. Juwan Parker ended up having to force a desperation heave from the wing which left the Bulldogs with a damaging loss.

They will try to put that behind them today against a Tennessee team that is 22-7 overall and tied for the best record in the conference with Auburn. Since losing to Georgia back on February 17, the Volunteers have won three straight with victories over Florida, Mississippi and Mississippi State.

The win over Tennessee was one of Georgia’s best performances of the season. After a tight first half, the Bulldogs outscored the Vols 45-36 in the second half. Yante Maten led five different players in double figures with 19. However, it was their defensive effort that was most impressive as they held Tennessee to just 35 percent shooting and leading scorer Grant Williams to just five points.

The Volunteers blew out Mississippi State on Tuesday behind 24 points from Admiral Schofield.

Tennessee is 12-2 at home this season with the No. 1 overall seed in the conference tournament still at stake. Auburn hosts South Carolina also on Saturday.

Tip off is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET and will be televised by the SEC Network.
