Kirby Smart just keeps collecting five star recruits. Today’s addition is a huge one, as American Heritage (Fort Lauderdale) cornerback Tyson Campbell chose Georgia over offers from Miami and Alabama among many others.
Campbell is the #12 prospect in America according to 247Sports, the #4 player in the state of Florida, and the #2 cornerback behind Alabama commit Patrick Surtain, Jr.
For my money, Tyson may in fact be the best cornerback prospect in the 2018 class. He at least has the most upside.
The 6’2.5, 185 pounder played well against loaded competition and was rarely thrown on by defenses. In all-star game and camp action this season it became clear that he’s really stepped up his game.
Campbell is smooth in coverage, with the speed to run with any receiver and the size to cover bigger wideouts and even tight ends. As we’ve also come to expect from Smart-recruited defensive backs, he’s also a physical hitter in the run game and an intense competitor.
I expect Campbell to start out at corner, but it doesn’t take a lot of work to imagine him playing the star position in Georgia’s defensive backfield. Frankly, he’d be a dynamite free safety as well with his ability to blanket so much ground.
After signing a plethora of defensive backs in 2017 Georgia didn’t need huge numbers at corner in this class, but they’ve gotten great quality, including players who could crack the depth chart early. Campbell is the seventh five star recruit in the Bulldogs’ 2018 class, and also the seventh top 25 recruit according to the 247Sports rankings. That’s, well, that’s pretty special. Until later . . .
Go ‘Dawgs!!!
