It’s college football semifinal Saturday! Three of the four best teams in college football and Notre Dame will square off tonight to decide who goes on to play for the national title.
But before we get there, the early slate includes a pair of bowl games of interest to Bulldog fans. Florida and Michigan will knock heads in the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl at noon on ESPN. You may be one of those folks who pulls for SEC teams in bowl games as a way of advancing the conference’s brand. You may make the perfectly reasonable argument that other SEC teams winning cross-sectional games strengthens Georgia’s case vis-a-vis other schools for postseason play. That’s all very reasonable and well thought out.
Personally I want to see Florida lose early, often, and excruciatingly. Go Big Blue!
Also at noon the most modern, Southern, and stylish of bowl games, the Belk Bowl, kicks off on ABC, pitting South Carolina against Virginia. The Gamecocks are favored in this one, and it’s fairly easy to see why. The ‘Hoos lost three of their last four to limp into bowl season, dropping conference games to Pitt, Georgia Tech, and Virginia Tech, sandwiching in an embarrassingly competitive 45-24 win over Liberty. How embarrassing? The Cavaliers led the 6-6 Flames 24-17 at the half. Big, dumb Muschamp football pulls out a big, dumb win in this one.
At 1:15 on the CBS Sports Network you can catch Nevada and Arkansas State in the Nova Home Loans Arizona Bowl. Honestly, I’m sure their fans are thrilled about this wolf-on-wolf affair, but this one is in a terrible time slot. It conflicts on the front end with the above SEC-involved contests and on the back end with the Cotton Bowl beginning at 4:00 on ESPN. Y’all just let me know how it ends.
We’ll be back with a separate thread for the big games this afternoon and evening. Until then, y’all enjoy the last college football Saturday of the season.
