‘Dawgs keep alive push for nation’s top class with pledge from linebacker Nakobe Dean

NCAA Football: CFP National Championship Game-Alabama vs Georgia Jason Getz-USA TODAY Sports

The day hasn’t been full of unrelenting great news like last year’s Signing Day, but Georgia did nail down a huge piece of the recruiting puzzle a few moments ago with the commitment of five star Mississippi (Horn Lake HS) linebacker Nakobe Dean.

Dean, rated the nation’s top linebacker by 247Sports, picked the ‘Dawgs over offers from Alabama and Ole Miss. No one deserves the mantle of “the next Roquan Smith.” That’s both a heap of praise and a whole heckuva lot to live up to. But anyone who watched Georgia’s run defense when Monty Rice was out this season should recognize that the scheme works a lot better when you have a guy who’s capable of tackling everyone and everything in the middle third of the field instantly.

Dean is that kind of ranger/linebacker. He’s physical, has a great nose for the ball, and yet (like Roquan) is also agile enough to play in space and cover.

It remains likely that the Bulldogs will finish second in this year’s recruiting sweepstakes right behind Alabama. But adding Dean was among the day’s critical missions. Until later....

Go ‘Dawgs!!!
