You could be forgiven for not knowing, what with the other matters that consumed your college football fandom hours in early January, but former Kansas City Chiefs coach Herm Edwards is taking over the head coaching duties at Arizona State. Reaction so far ranges from "that’s flipping crazy" to "that’s so crazy it just might work."
I think all involved expect that Edwards will have a little bit of a learning curve adjusting to the collegiate game. After all he hasn’t coached a football team since 2008 and hasn’t coached in college football since 1989. But the folks at footballscoop.com posted some snippets from a recent interview which tell you exactly how much Edwards may have to learn.
Did you know that your team’s coaches should already be recruiting players who can’t sign for another ten whole months, dear fan? That’s just a trip. It’s almost like recruiting never stops.
Or that you have to win over not just the player, but also his family? Mind-blowing.
I leave open the possibility that Edwards was just making small talk, or that he doesn’t want to reveal too much. But I also leave open the possibility that he is in way over his head and everyone in the ASU football offices will be job hunting again within the next two seasons.
