Georgia’s six-day break following the Wooden Legacy Tournament couldn’t have come at a better time. The Bulldogs limped their way through a solid showing thanks to a virus that infected 11 players. Georgia wrapped up the tournament with a resume building win over No. 21 Saint Mary’s. They missed an opportunity against San Diego State but with all things considered it wasn’t a bad showing at all.
Georgia returns to action on Saturday with its second true road game of the season against Marquette. The Golden Eagles are 5-2 with both losses coming against ranked opponents Purdue and Wichita State.
Marquette is led by a talented but small backcourt including 5-10 senior guard Andrew Rowsey (23.7 ppg, 5-11 sophomore Markus Howard (19.9 ppg) and 6-7 guard Sam Hauser (13.3 ppg). Rowsey and Howard are knocking down 40 percent of their three-point attempts while Hauser checks in at 45 percent. The Golden Eagles are shooting 38 percent from deep as a team so Georgia’s perimeter defense is going to be put to the test.
Marquette’s backcourt did take a hit this week with the dismissal of 6-5 guard Haanif Cheatham who was averaging 8.2 points and started the first five games of the season.
The Golden Eagles won in Athens last year and lead the all-time series 2-0.
