We’ll be along with Dawg Bites and your other regular Wednesday programming shortly. But first, an open question to the group: where were you when Georgia was last ranked #1 in the nation in collegiate football?
If you need a refresher, and I wouldn’t blame you one bit if you did, the date was August 31, 2008. Georgia had just dispatched Georgia Southern 45–21 to open the season. I remember the game for two primary reasons: the concession stands were out of ice in the first quarter, and AJ Green caught his first UGA touchdown pass.
From where I was sitting it was a pretty good effort. The game was never really in doubt, exactly what you're looking for when a #1 ranked team takes on an FCS opponent. Georgia dropped in the polls anyway.
Later that year Nick Saban’s Alabama Crimson Tide would visit Sanford Stadium for the infamous "funeral." It wasn't the end of the Mark Richt era, that would have to wait another seven years for another visit from Alabama in my opinion.
But it is a good reminder that your luck can change really fast in college football. Of course, this #1 ranking feels a little bit different than that one. That Georgia program was signaling that it had arrived. This Bulldog team feels like it's signaling that it's on the way. Truly, these are exciting times.
I don't mind telling you that it's just not as much fun to write about Georgia Bulldog football when Georgia Bulldog football is losing a lot of football games. So I'm enjoying this. I'm savoring it.
Because I hope that Georgia stays number one clear through January. But I know that there are no guarantees of that. I want to thank all of you for being here in the tough times, and I I think I speak for the entire staff when I say we're glad you're here now.
Go ‘Dawgs!!!
