Round 1 is now complete, and we move to Friday of Masters Week. Everyone is still in play, but we honestly need low scores to have UGA represented on Saturday and Sunday.
Harris English shot 74 (+2). His three birdies were decent, but the 5 bogeys hurt, especially on the par 5 8th hole. His stats aren't bad, but his putting is holding him back. He needs probably a 68 or 69 to make the cut.
Chris Kirk shot 38-38 for a 76 (+4). No birdies, and his putting was right in line with English. He will need at least 68 to play the weekend.
Kevin Kisner bogeyed #1, but eagled #2. He shot even par 36 on the first nine, but his undoing came at #11 with a triple bogey. Two more bogeys coming in and a 41 on the second nine gives him a 77 (+5) on the day.
Bubba Watson came out of the gates strong, birdieing the first hole. Birdies at 7 and 8 getting it to 3 under par at one point. But bogeys at 9, 11, 12, 14,15,16. 17. And unlikely birdie at 18, and he shoots 34 on the first nine, and 41 on the second nine. So he finished with 75(+3).
As MaconDawg said, "Spieth happens." And he happened to 66 it. He was out early, and took advantage of the slightly softer and slightly less windy conditions to tear it up. World #1 Jason Day shot 31 on the first nine, but dunked a ball on 16, and fell back to 2 under par. There are several at 4 and 3 under par, including Rory McIlroy and Arsenal fan Ian Poulter. 22 players finished under par, with 8 players shooting 80(+8) or worse. The Orange Puma, Rickie Fowler, is one of those carding an 80.
English tees off at 1:28 pm EDT.
Kirk puts peg to ground just before him at 1:17 pm EDT.
Kisner is just behind those guys at 2:01 pm EDT.
and Bubba Watson will be finished as those guys start, since he begins his day at 9:37 am EDT.
TV times are same as Thursday. ESPN from 3:00 pm to 7:30 pm EDT. They will replay this from 8:00 - 11:00 pm. CBS runs a highlight show from 11:30-11:45 pm.
