Georgia offers JUCO corner, California prospect in search for size in the secondary

NCAA Football: Georgia at South Carolina Jim Dedmon-USA TODAY Sports

Kirby Smart has repeatedly talked about the need for Georgia’s defensive backs to get bigger and more physical. He and his staff took a step in that direction this week when they offered Garden City Community College’s Lonnie Johnson, a 6’3, 205 pound corner.

Johnson recently took visits to Kentucky and West Virginia and now appears set to visit Athens officially this weekend. The Gary, Indiana native committed to Ohio State out of high school as part of the class of 2014, then to Iowa State last season, but did not ultimately attend either.

As if that wasn't enough, Georgia also offered California corner and current Florida commit Elijah Blades. The 6’3 Pasadena product is rated the #20 corner in the nation by 247Sports and also claims offers from Utah, Arizona, Colorado, and Nebraska.

It’s no secret that the Bulldogs desperately need defensive backs who can hold the sideline in the running game, jam receivers at the point of attack, and win jump balls downfield. All of these duties are key components of Kirby Smart’s defense, and all are things with which the Red and Black struggled at some point in 2016. These latest offers underscore the lengths to which UGA is willing to go to address those issues. Until later....
