It’s once again Thursday night, which means the kickoff of the college football weekend in these parts.
Tonight we don’t have some piddling MAC on MAC action. No, at 7:30 eastern on ESPN we’ve got an ACC matchup featuring a top 15 team and a squad which some pegged as a possible top 25 candidate now trying to avoid an 0-3 start. Clemson travels to Louisville sporting a #11 ranking and led by former Gainesville Red Elephant Deshaun Watson. Watson has completed 75% of his passes coming out of offseason surgery. He’ll face a Louisville defense that gave up 34 points to Houston. That’s the kind of thing that will make Todd Grantham scream. You know, along with leaving the mustard off his sandwich or when he tunes in only to find out that he’s already seen this episode of Fixer Upper.
A loss by the Cardinals would mean their first 0-3 start in 31 years, the kind of thing that usually ends with Bobby Petrino leaving notes in players’ lockers and booking a plane ticket. On the flipside, after crusing to wins over Appalachian State and Wofford, this will be America’s first chance to see what the guys from the other side of Lake Hartwell really have in the tank this season. My guess is that a Louisville team with its back against the wall plays hard but can’t overcome a very real gap in talent and experience.
