Championship Saturday Open Thread: What A Difference A Week Makes.

Joshua S. Kelly-USA TODAY Sports

It's conference championship day across most of college football. Honestly, it feels a little weird. Georgia fans are going to watch the SEC Championship Game this afternoon, and many of them will join me in rooting for the Alabama Crimson Tide. The Alabama defense is of course coordinated by Kirby Smart, or as I shall henceforth refer to him, "he who must eventually be named."

I think a strong showing by HWMEBN's unit will make a solid advertisement for the future of Bulldog football. Don't think that every big stop won't be accompanied by tonight's announcing crew noting for the benefit of blue hoppers watching at home how excited Georgia fans must be to see that guy coming. Sure, I understand that some of you are actually pulling for the Florida Gators to knock Alabama out of playoff contention so that Smart might get to Athens a little sooner to get started. You're wrong. Let me explain why.

First, rule #1: I hate Florida. I ain't rooting for the Gators until Judgment Day arrives, and even then I want them to have to sweat through about a quarter and a half of tribulations first.

Second, do you really want Jim McElwain to win the SEC in his first year in Gainesville? Have you considered how insufferable this will make Florida fans over the next few months, and what a big recruiting selling point that is?

Finally, the difference between Smart arriving on campus on January 5th and January 12th is pretty negligible. He can find and name his assistants right where he is. Those assistants can come on to the Classic City as their schedules allow. They can all begin recruiting without Smart being done in Tuscaloosa. It just isn't worth it folks. Roll Tide.

Having gotten that off my chest, here's the rest of the week's college football action. Some of these games have already taken place obviously (go Bowling Green!), but with all that's happened in the past few days, well, to be honest this is the first time I've gotten around to posting it.  Mea culpa. Feel free to use this as your open thread for all the day's action. We'll open up a new thread this evening if comment volume warrants, but barring the installation of Willie Martinez as  Bulldog defensive coordinator that may not happen. Until later . . .
