UGA Picks Up Huge Defensive End Commitment.

In a bit of a surprise, Georgia picked up a commitment today from a top prospect out of South Carolina had been committed to Florida State.

Dale Zanine-USA TODAY Sports

Bulldog coaches got some great news this afternoon when four-star South Carolina defense event Michael Barnett announced that he would be changing his commitment from the Florida State Seminoles to the Georgia Bulldogs. Barnett is a 6 foot five, 258 pound true 4-3 defense end who could put on some size and move down to the nose, especially in passing situations.

The Dorchester (Woodland HS) standout is rated by 247Sports as the third best recruit in the state of South Carolina, and the tenth best strong side defensive end in the nation. Barnett had been scheduled to sign financial aid paperwork allowing him to enroll at Florida State during ceremony at his high school this morning. Instead, he surprisingly signed financial aid paperwork allowing him to enroll early at Georgia, and possibly thereby count against the Bulldogs' 2014 scholarship allotment.

Barnett is the sixth commitment along the defensive front for the 2014 class, the seventh if you count Mays standout Natrez Patrick, who could also play linebacker. It is all part of a plan by new Defensive Cordinator Jeremy Pruitt to make over the Bulldog defensive front as faster and more agile both inside and out. Barnett is the type of rangy, quick defender who could be plugged in at multiple spots and in multiple situations to further that objective. What's more, while I am as much a fan is anyone of "closing the borders", it's never a bad thing to steal a blue-chip prospect out of Steve Spurrier's backyard.

We will be back later with the always entertaining Friday Tailgate, as well as some additional recruiting meetings. Until then…
