Hello again, my old friend

University of Georgia Sports Information

It's Friday.  The weather is wonderful around Athens, so who wants to head down to campus?

Pictured up above at the top is Elizabeth Tepe.  She is a senior at Georgia, and can launch a hammer over 210 feet, which was good enough to make her an SEC Champion.  Her Georgia track & field teammates are up in Lexington, Ky right now continuing pursuits of their own SEC titles.  Freshman Kendall Williams, sophomore Maicel Uibo, and others are leading in their multi-day events (heptathlon, decathlon), with Uibo and junior Garrett Scatling already underway and having won the discus for Uibo and 110 hurdles for Scatling as the Georgia boys look to finish in the top 2 spots.  You can follow action here.

Men's golf is looking good after the first day of action in San Antonio.  They need to finish in the top 5 to advance to the NCAA Championships.  Checking live stats at the time I'm typing these exact words, Georgia is 14 strokes better than second place in the middle of day 2 out of 3, so I'd say it's pretty safe to assume they'll be in Kansas next weekend shooting for an NCAA title.

Georgia softball is going after an NCAA title themselves.  And that journey continues today at 5, and on through the weekend as they compete in their NCAA regional bracket double elimination set up.  The game this evening is Chatanooga, with UAB and NC St rounding out the 4 teams fighting to make the Super Regional.  Staying on the diamond, baseball lost to Kentucky.

Of course, the big deal around Athens is the NCAA Tennis Championships going on.  The ladies knocked off Southern Cal in a nail biter yesterday.  That means tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon at 4 is a match against the 8th seeded Florida Gators.  Also yesterday, Alabama defeated Notre Dame, Stanford took care of Cal, Florida beat Vandy (of course), UCLA advanced over Miami and Duke over Clemson to reach the Final 8.  The rain yesterday caused North Carolina (over Texas A&M) and Virginia (over Baylor) to advance back to Athens as they had to bus up to Atlanta to play indoors at Tech to get their matches in.

The men are going today, with our boys getting North Carolina at 4 (same time Kentucky takes on Oklahoma).  Already in the books is a Southern Cal victory over Columbia and Texas taking out California.  Virginia is up comfortably on Notre Dame right now, and Baylor is sitting on top of Illinois.

Now, Go Dawgs!
