The University of Georgia announced on Tuesday that reserve center John Cannon has left the basketball team and will seek a transfer. Cannon is a junior and has appeared in 60 games for the Bulldogs averaging 1.9 points and 1.4 rebounds. He has seen his role reduced this season averaging just 4.6 minutes per game in 18 appearances.
The timing is a bit peculiar given that the SEC Tournament is set to begin on Wednesday. Cannon indicated that leaving now would "allow him a head start" in evaluating his options.
Mark Fox issued this statement in regards to Cannon's departure:
"I'd like to wish John the best as he continues his career," Fox said. "I certainly understand his desire for more opportunities for playing time elsewhere. We appreciate his contributions to the program over the past three years."
Cannon's departure opens up an additional scholarship for the Bulldogs. Donte Williams is the team's only senior. Georgia has no current commitments but will be looking to add to its frontcourt.
