I don't know if I've ever mentioned it before on the blog, but I hate Thanksgiving. I really hate the entire stupid holiday. Such is my disdain for Thanksgiving, that I prefer to skip it altogether. In fact, on November 1st when my Halloween decorations came down... my Christmas decorations went up. No Thanksgiving here!
You see, from 2002 until 2011 or so I had to go to 4 or 5 Thanksgiving dinners spreading from the weekend before to the weekend after. And while turkey and dressing and cranberry sauce may be okay every now and then, choking down the same generic meal 5 times in a week is more than I can take. And let's not forget that (most of the time) there are at least a few people who we could really live without seeing. Its not that I'm not thankful, mind you. I have much to be thankful for... I just don't need a miserable week of slogging from one get together to another to do it. And that is why, for the third year running I will be driving the 10 hours to the house my parents rent each year on Sanibel Island. As I sit on the pristine, almost unoccupied beach not eating turkey, I will be very very thankful indeed.
However, there is one good thing about Thanksgiving and the week surrounding it. And that, of course, is football as far as the eye can see. That late November pigskin goodness begins this weekend and I think we can all be thankful for that. Here are the games that are worth getting off my beach chair for:
THURSDAY
#12 Kansas State Wildcats @ West Virginia Mountaineers (7:00, Fox Sports 1)
The Wildcats head into Morgantown for a night game against the Mountaineers. We've all seen West Virginia play spoiler in this type of game and it wouldn't shock me to see that happen here. If it does, I suggest Bill Snyder hightail it back to Kansas before the ritualistic furniture burning begins.
FRIDAY
UTEP Miners @ Rice Owls (8:00, Fox Sports 1)
Not much to choose from here... just the hope that an infamous couple is still together and have decided to take their show on the road (NSFW?).
SATURDAY NOON
Charleston Southern Buccaneers @ #10 Georgia Bulldogs (12:00, SEC Network)
Picking this game probably seems biased (and, in fact, I'm sure it is), but unless you enjoy subjecting yourself to the Big 10's particular brand of "football", you could honestly make an argument that this is the most interesting game in the time slot. And its got Nick Chubb rushing for a couple hundred yards in the 1st quarter before taking a much deserved rest... so... yeah.
SATURDAY MIDDAY
#15 Arizona Wildcats @ #17 Utah Utes (3:30, ESPN)
#8 Ole Miss Rebels @ Arkansas Razorbacks (3:30, CBS)
#24 Louisville Cardinals @ Unranked (as it ever should be) Notre Dame Fighting Irish (3:30 NBC)
There are numerous midday games featuring ranked teams. These are the only ones that figure to be competitive. Take your pick. Mine will probably be that crazy Bielema trying to get on a roll (which would also improve Georgia's resume)
SATURDAY EVENING
#20 Missouri Tigers @ Tennessee Volunteers (7:30, ESPN)
I generally like the Missouri Tigers and their fanbase. I generally don't care for the Volunteers (to put it politely). That said, I'm sorry Tigers but I'm gonna need you to go ahead and lose this one... for obvious reasons.
SATURDAY LATE
Boise State Broncos @ Wyoming Cowboys (10:15, ESPN2)
Why Boise State and Wyoming you ask? Because its 10:15 at night and I don't acknowledge the existence of the Pac-12 Network. Boise State/Wyoming it is!
That's all for this week folks. Until next time...
GOOOO DAWGS!!!
