With a 5 point victory over 5th seeded Iowa St, Andy Lander's 4th seeded Lady Dawgs advanced to the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament's Sweet 16. This will be Lander's 20th appearance in the Sweet 16, out of 30 NCAA teams (and 32 NCAA Tournaments held all time).
The Lady Dawgs shot poorly for the game (36.5% from the field), and were outrebounded (44-35), but nailed 12 3-pointers and forced 12 turnovers out of the Lady Cyclones while only giving it away 5 times.
Freshman Shacobia Barbee led the way with a career-high 20 points, to go with 5 rebounds and 3 deep balls, in a back and forth affair that saw 6 ties and 7 lead changes. Senior Anne Marie Armstrong chipped in 13 points, 5 boards, and 3 big 3-pointers of her own, while fellow senior Jasmine James had a stat-line stuffine night of 9 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists, and a steal from her PG spot.
You can follow Chuckdawg's one man play (by play) from last night's game thread. Or his quick recap of, "The game was so - just out of sorts. We were the more athletic team, and took a big lead midway through the 2nd Half, and then we REALLY wanted to go lights out and made such poor shots instead of finishing the drill, and although we were more athletic, ISU had two giant women that basically are undefendable (how do you defend a 6'7" woman in the pant with her arms up to shoot?). Such a dichotomy. And we started 3 seniors and 2 freshman, which was our line up for most of the game. Just so different in so many ways. Oh, and we are absolutely horrible in FG%, and 3 %, so ISU did exactly what they should have done, make us play on the perimeter, and then UGA starts raining long range buckets."
Georgia will now face the winner of tonight's matchup between 1-seeded Stanford and 8th-seeded Michigan (the home team Cardinal are overwhelming favorites to advance) on Saturday, March 30th. Tip off time has not be determined yet, but the game will be televised by ESPN. (Post edit - Stanford advanced. We will play them at 9 pm Saturday night, on ESPN.)
Having just advanced out of a pod played in Spokane, Washington, Georgia should be familiar with the arena they are going to play in next weekend, as it will also be in Spokane. Georgia has said they will not make the cross country flight back to Athens this week, and will stay in city located near the state line with Montana situated between the Rockies and Cascade Mountains as they prepare for their upcoming games.
