There really is nothing in the world I love more than college football bowl games. Of course, they don't mean as much now as they used to for some and anything short of a national championship seems like a disappointment to so many. And it doesn't help that the TV networks and corporate sponsors keep coming up with more and more bowls with steadily more ridiculous names while simultaneously ruining the concept of the New Year's Day bowl games by spreading all the big games out over what feels like a week and a half.
I remember when I was a kid, New Year's Day was crazy. The day was packed with games and you probably couldn't watch them all even if you tried. And if you did want to give it a go, you were gonna need a TV in each room... and snacks... lots of snacks.
Those days are obviously gone, but there is still something altogether unique about getting together with your family (who lets face it, you're already tired of after the Christmas festivities) and drowning them out with the sweet refrain of college football. Toss in the fact that we're typically talking about two teams matching up that don't meet very often, and you've got a recipe from some potentially exciting action.
So until the college football playoff comes in another couple of years and pushes us even further away from what the bowls used to be, lets take some time to enjoy them once again.
With that said, here are my top 5 games to watch this Bowl Season:
1) Capital One Bowl - Jan. 1, 2013 - 1:00 pm - #7 Georgia Bulldogs vs. #16 Nebraska Cornhuskers
Why? Like you really need to ask.
2) Fiesta Bowl - Jan. 3, 2013 - 8:30 pm - #4 Oregon Ducks vs #5 Kansas St. Wildcats
Why? I would contend that there is probably going to be quite a bit of scoring in this one. A good old fashioned track meet is always a blast to watch, even if it isn't generally how we play the game in SEC country.
3) Cotton Bowl - Jan. 4, 2013 - 8:00 pm - #9 Texas A&M Aggies vs. #11 Oklahoma Sooners
Why? I'm really interested to see how a year of SEC seasoning has taken to the Aggies who return to face a former Big 12 counterpart. Plus, Big Game Bob is always good for some bowl game shenanigans.
4) BCS National Championship Game - Jan. 7, 2012 - 8:30 pm - #1 Notre Dame Fighting Irish vs. #2 Alabama Crimson Tide
Why? It should be noted that I have no love for Alabama. It should also be noted that I don't chant "SEC, SEC, SEC!" and as far as I'm concerned every team in the conference should lose every game they play forever and ever. And furthermore I have been known to root for Ohio State (2006), Oklahoma (2008), and Oregon (2010) in this game, so it can't be said that I am tainted by conference bias. But I f'n HATE Notre Dame! From Lou Holtz to Rudy, I hope they all suffocate from having their heads so far up the media's butt. Roll Tide!
5) Alamo Bowl - Dec. 29, 2012 - 6:45 pm - #23 Texas Longhorns vs #13 Oregon St. Beavers
Why? Mack Brown's seat has got to be feeling a wee bit toasty at the moment... and I have to imagine retirement is starting to look pretty appealing. Given that, it should be intriguing to see how the Longhorns come out against the Beavers. Has the makings of a very interesting game.
Also... The Worst Game of the Bowl Season?
Sun Bowl - Dec. 31, 2012 - 2:00 pm - Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets vs. USC Trojans
Why? I could go on about bowl waivers and Lane Kiffin and the triple option and Matt Barkley and Tech's wretched D, but honestly this game is just so full of meh. /MDWM
