The fourth-ranked Georgia softball team hosted Kennesaw State for a midweek tilt on Wednesday evening, emerging victorious after building up a 6-0 lead.
Although KSU starter Abbey Meixel walked the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the first frame, the Bulldogs failed fully to capitalize, as catcher Ashley Razey brought one home with a base hit but the next two Athenians to enter the batter’s box registered outs to strand three and leave the lead at 1-0.
Georgia added another run in the second stanza when shortstop Laura Trout drew a leadoff walk, stole second, and came home on a double by second baseman Ashley Pauly. Nevertheless, that gave the Red and Black a runner in scoring position with no one out, but the home team was unable to advance her past third base.
Two singles and a sacrifice fly by the Bulldogs added a third earned run in the third canto before a pair of Owl errors allowed two unearned runs to cross home plate. Left fielder Megan Wiggins’s first-pitch single to lead off the bottom of the fourth inning led to an additional run for the Athenians when the runner advanced on a wild pitch and came home on a groundout.
Meanwhile, Morgan Montemayor carried a no-hit shutout into the fifth frame, but both were broken up in Kennesaw State’s turn at the plate. A leadoff walk and a pair of two-out singles brought a run home to cut the Athenians’ leads to 6-2 in hits and 6-1 in runs. That marked the end of the scoring and very nearly the end of the hitting---KSU carded a two-out single in the top of the seventh stanza---so Montemayor walked away with the win after going five innings and striking out seven while conceding only two hits and one earned run.
