Andy Landers’s Lady Bulldogs, who went 1-1 in last month’s Lady Rebel Round-Up in the UNLV arena, returned to Sin City for the opening outing of the Las Vegas Holiday Hoops Classic on Monday evening. When the 13th-ranked Georgia Bulldogs met the 25th-ranked Gonzaga Bulldogs, the wrong set of Bulldogs went away hoping that what happened in Vegas stayed in Vegas, as Gonzaga shocked Georgia at the buzzer.
The Red and Black led throughout, but the Zags chipped away at their lead as the Athenians turned the ball over and missed free throws. Twice in the final minute, Jasmine James went to the charity stripe with the opportunity to put the game away, but she missed the first shot of a one-and-one in each instance, leading to scores by the West Coast Conference club both times.
James’s misses left the door open for Gonzaga, and Hayden Palmer made Georgia pay with the three-pointer that gave the Zags a 71-68 triumph. The victors took their first lead of the contest on the game-winning basket with two-tenths of a second remaining on the clock. The loss drops the Classic City Canines to 8-2.
