A pair of ranked teams will meet on the diamond in Athens this afternoon, but neither squad will be coached by David Perno. I am referring, of course, to the seventh-ranked Georgia softball team, which hosts No. 18 Florida State at 5:00 today. The Bulldogs and the Seminoles have split ten previous series meetings and the Red and Black boast a 22-4 record built on 50 home runs and 80 stolen bases. If those aren't reasons enough to get you to the ballpark, the first 200 students through the gate will walk away with aviator sunglasses sporting a "G" logo and free pizza.
While we're on the subject of women's sports, there's a Bulldog basketball team in the NCAA tournament right now, and it ain't the one coached by Mark Fox. Andy Landers's Lady Dogs took down Oklahoma State in overtime to advance to the Sweet Sixteen. The win gave Coach Landers his 750th career victory and gave the Red and Black their eighteenth trip to the regional semifinals. Georgia faces Stanford in Sacramento on Saturday.
While we're on the subject of postseason tournaments to determine an NCAA champion, Senator Blutarsky and Michael Elkon say all that needs to be said.
Go 'Dawgs!
