Mallory Hetzel Falls in Quarterfinals; 56 Georgia Freshmen Make Honor Roll

After advancing to the quarterfinals of the North & South Amateur Championship, rising Georgia junior Mallory Hetzel fell to higher-seeded Maggie Simons. Hetzel led for most of the front nine but she and Simons were tied at the halfway mark.

Simons took her first lead over Hetzel by winning the 10th and 11th holes in the match play competition. The Georgia lady linkster pulled within one by capturing the 12th hole, but the recent Wake Forest alumna pulled away from her after that.

In other news, the S.E.C. academic honor roll includes 56 Georgia freshmen student-athletes. Only South Carolina (64) placed more first-year students on the list than the Red and Black.

Among the familiar Georgia athletes appearing on the academic honor roll are Diamond Dogs Steven Esmonde, Alex McRee, and Ryan Woolley, Gym Dogs Marcia Newby and Grace Taylor, and football players Kris Durham and Matthew Stafford.

Evidently, I owe the Bulldogs' starting quarterback an apology.

Our congratulations go out to the young Bulldogs who have distinguished themselves in the classroom as well as on the field.
