Smart was seriously torn between the two schools over the weekend, and ultimately his decision was based not on money but on professional considerations.
I’ve got a great deal of respect for Coach Richt and the job he has done there and the University of Georgia will also have a special place in my heart. Not only did I play there, but my wife played basketball there and we have a lot of friends at UGA.
At the end of the day, I just feel like this is where I am supposed to be and this is a special time to be at the University of Alabama.
There are two ways to look at this now:
1.) Georgia made a good run at a very good head coach. The money being talked about should have been enough to lure virtually any coach away.
2.) They didn't get him -- or Chavis or Koenning or Foster or, through more than six weeks, anyone else.
Kirby is going to be staying here at the University of Alabama with us.
Still just waiting, folks. And I wouldn't read much into the plane. Flight tracker is like FootballCoachScoop.com-- they don't do reporting.
We're not much beyond where we were Sunday morning in terms of specifics. The offer is on the table for Kirby, and while it is believed Alabama has countered, everything I've been told is that -- based strictly on dollars -- it would be unlikely that a counter would match Georgia. But we also know there's more to any move than dollars, so that doesn't make it a slam dunk. In fact, it's probably fair to say that, while money speaks volumes in a deal like this, lateral moves often come down to the perks.
So nothing is done yet in one direction or the other, but I find it hard to believe this can continue too much longer. I credit Mark Richt for staying quiet about everything, but the whole situation is far too public at this point to let it continue to simmer for several more days. We may not know who the next DC at Georgia will be in the next 48 hours, but I'll be very surprised if we don't know whether or not it's Kirby Smart.
Mark "suntan" Richt is going after Kirby Smart to save his own job ,the bulldogs need a shot in the arm , and Georgia had better get a shot of something and quick, unless it wants to roam around in mediocre land with the likes of the Kentucky 's and the Mississippi's of the world for the next couple decades. So Mark and the powers that be in Athens are trying to get a Saban type defense by offering probably close to a million bucks to Smart . I think he'll take it, the money is too much and maybe even the coach in waiting bait , you know the bird in the hand, two in the bush stuff. But if he believed in his self and stayed at Alabama making a comfortable 400 grand a year, he could get a head coaching job in the neighborhood of 2, or 3 million dollars in a couple years, ( probably the Ga job ) anyway it is his wagon let him pull it. even if he gets Smart ( lol ) Mark is on life support , two more 7 and 5 years will do him in.
