But Gary Stokan, president of the Chick-fil-A bowl, said Tuesday night that his bowl has no "clear-cut favorite" from the SEC and hasn't extended an invitation to a team. He said Georgia is still in the mix. "In the bowl business, you hear a lot of things this time of year," Stokan said. "Until official invitations are given and official invitations are accepted, there's nothing in concrete." Stokan said among reasons Tennessee would be attractive is that it played Alabama and Florida close, won three of its last four and has an excited fan base with a new coach in Lane Kiffin. He said Georgia's pluses include playing a rugged schedule including a win over No. 7 Georgia Tech.

Keep hope alive?

If things go according to plan and Ole Miss head to the Cotton and Georgia Tech wins the ACC championship game, I'd say it's almost a lock that Georgia will go to the Chick-fil-A Bowl. The matchup against Clemson (as the ACC's No. 2) would be a very attractive one and would sell quickly. (Note: I've seen a handful of projections with Virginia Tech going to the CFA, but I just don't see that happening. Tech has already traveled to Atlanta twice this year -- vs. Alabama and vs. Georgia Tech. I can't see a lot of Hokie fans wanting to make a third trip.)

David Hale tells me exactly what I want to hear. (Boy, didn't I tell you not to do that? Yes, sir, you did. Well, O.K., then!)

Georgia is currently 1.5 games ahead of the Vols in the SEC standings with two games to play, so unless Georgia blows it this week against Kentucky, the Dawgs will lock up the second spot in the East. But if Tennessee is within a game of Georgia -- which means they'd have to beat both Vandy and Kentucky to close out the year -- then the Outback could take the Vols based on the Kiffin-related hype and UT's head-to-head blowout win over Georgia. That would likely drop the Dawgs to the Chick-fil-A, and a UGA-Clemson matchup would probably draw very, very well.
