Women's Golf Team in Fourth Place Going Into Final Round

The Georgia women's golf team, which improved its standing in the second round of the N.C.A.A. Championships, again rose on the leaderboard during the third day of competition on Thursday, shooting a 300 to move into fourth place heading into Friday's final round.

No. 1-ranked Duke remains in first place with a cumulative 880 score, trailed by Purdue (888), U.C.L.A. (893), and Georgia (902). Although the two-time defending national champion Blue Devils' 22-shot lead over the Classic City Canines most likely is insurmountable, the Bulldogs are only nine strokes in back of the Bruins and they lag behind the Boilermakers by 14 shots, so further upward mobility remains within reach.

In other news, it is well known that men's basketball is the only sport in which Georgia is demonstrably inferior to Florida . . . for the moment. Maybe Dennis Felton should visit Kuwait more often.

Finally, on a more somber note, Brian Grummell brings us the news that Vince Dooley is recovering from surgery to remove a tumor near his vocal cords. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Dooley family.
