Saturday Afternoon Dawg Bites: Spring Sports Update

On the day I set up shop here at SportsBlogs Nation, I wrote that the name of the site was intended to be taken literally: Dawg Sports aspired to cover University of Georgia athletics in their entirety. Accordingly, the following data were worth sharing:

At yesterday's magnificently-christened Spec Towns National Team Invitational and Bulldog Heptathlon, Georgia's Jennifer Dahlgren threw a hammer 239 feet and four inches. That's almost 80 yards. In so doing, Dahlgren broke her own record, improving upon it by more than two and a half feet. Dahlgren's toss set new high water marks for the Southeastern Conference, the N.C.A.A., and South America. (Dahlgren is from Argentina.) It has been said that Neil Armstrong can win every argument in which he finds himself by announcing, "I was the first man to walk on the moon." I have to think that Jennifer Dahlgren can end a few fights by declaring, "I can throw a hammer farther than anyone else on the continent."
While we're on the subject of female athletes from foreign countries, Scotland's Krystle Caithness has signed a letter of intent to play golf for the Red and Black. Caithness, a competitive golfer since the age of six, has won numerous titles and captured the 2006 St. Rule Trophy at St. Andrews by shooting 11 under par, putting her within a stroke of the tournament record. That's pretty impressive, especially considering that the tournament is played at the place where golf was invented.

No word yet whether Krystle Caithness's parents gave her the name that they did because they enjoyed "Dynasty" reruns from the United States.

As I write this, Georgia's women's tennis team is in Knoxville to wrap up the regular season with the S.E.C. title on the line. With a win this afternoon, the Bulldogs would capture their seventh conference crown.
Ere we leave the court, I should mention that, on Thursday evening, the Georgia men's tennis team improved to 22-0 with a 7-0 thumping of Baylor. When the No. 4 team in the land is blanked by the No. 1 team in the land, that's news worth noting.

In football, a 7-0 win over Baylor is embarrassing, but, in tennis, a 7-0 win over Baylor is impressive.

The Diamond Dogs defeated the Crimson Tide in an S.E.C. road game last night, giving a much-needed boost to the Bulldog baseball team. The Red and Black go for the series-clinching win this afternoon in Tuscaloosa.
Last but by no means least, the second-ranked S.E.C. runner-up Gym Dogs will be in action tonight in the North Central Regional in Denver, Colo. Suzanne Yoculan's two-time defending national championship squad will go up against No. 11 Penn State, No. 14 Denver, No. 23 Brigham Young, No. 25 Minnesota, and Utah State in their effort to qualify for the N.C.A.A. Championships for the 24th straight time. Georgia has emerged victorious from 18 regional competitions and, in 18 of the last 20 seasons, the Red and Black have finished the campaign among the top three gymnastics teams in the country, winning seven national titles.

The Gym Dogs are championship-winning athletes competing in an exciting sport . . . and they probably spend less time getting ready in the morning than Mike Greenberg.
