Athletic Department Rewards Felton, Terence Moore Answers Your Career Questions.

The AJC is reporting that UGA basketball coach Dennis Felton will receive a two year contract extension and a $50,000 pay raise when the Athletic Association's executive board meets today. Felton's current deal has two years remaining and pays "only" $700K a year.

This seems like a solidly proportional move by Damon Evans and crew. The roughly 7% raise isn't god-awful ridiculous, but solid enough to signal a commitment to Coach Felton. I haven't hit the internets to see where that leaves Felton relative to other SEC coaches. Frankly though, I don't think even Coach Felton could argue with a straight face that he's yet entitled to Billy Donovan level money.

In other related news, AJC writer Terence Moore took a new job as a bass-ackwards career coach this morning, arguing (with help from some uncomfortable quotes from former Associate AD Dick Bestwick) that Tubby Smith should have stayed at Georgia.

Given Moore's reputation as a journalistic s**t-stirrer, I wasn't wholly surprised to see the quote from Bestwick essentially saying that he wishes Tubby were in Athens right now. I'm betting that wasn't how Bestwick meant it. But that's Terence Moore's schtick, and we're all used to it by now.

What's noteworthy is exactly how wrong this proposition is. Now, I have to admit that I wish Tubby had stayed at Georgia. And while I'm no Nostradamus, I feel pretty comfortable projecting that Tubby's continued tenure in the Stege would have saved us the ignobility and outright shame of the Jirsa/Harrick years.

However, as Moore notes, we were going to eventually pay Smith what Kentucky was willing to offer. I bet you Terence Moore doesn't pick his jobs based on what he's promised he'll make a few years down the road. I also think that Tubby had no way of knowing that our mammoth facilities improvement effort would come to fruition as promised and on schedule.

And this is of course before we note the fact that, oh yeah, he's got a big, honking National Championship ring to show for his trouble. Look, I like to think that Smith would have ultimately led us to the basketball promised land long before now. However, I also understand that in 1997 Athens was to college basketball as Nassau is to public sanitation: better than Mexico City, but still a long way from the Platonic ideal.

Ultimately, I'm happy with who we have and what we have right now. It's a damn sight better than our situation two years ago, and I'm comfortable that two years from now we'll again have seen improvement. I don't fault Tubby for making the decision he did, and I think on balance it worked out for him, despite the sour ending. What do ya'll think?

It pains me to write it, but I think Terrence Moore is right.  It, however, would have been better had he written something to that effect at the time Tubby left.  (Maybe he did and I missed it).

Since I am far from UGA these days, I lose track of chronologies and it does not seem that 10 years ago UGA's athletic dept was into much of anything except football.

The part about Georgia's basketball talent has been evident for a long time (going back to the early 80s) but that talent left the state.

Given a choice between Tubby and Felton--give me Tubby any day.  The best thing would have been saving UGA from Harrick--a scumbag if there ever was one.  (And I have witnesses that verify that I blasted that hire when it was made!).  Jirsa was just not a coach ready for the big time; it was not a good promotion, but those things are going to happen everywhere (Dougherty at UNC being a great example).  At least Jirsa did not drag the program and university through the mud.

Re: As the Tub turns . . .
SkiDawg, I don't doubt that Tubby staying would have been better for Georgia. And I tend to agree with you, in that if you hog-tied me and wouldn't let me up until I picked between Felton and Smith, I'd choose Smith in 3 seconds or less. But for Tubby, knowing what he knew at the time, and seeing where our athletic priorities were at the time, it was the right move for him. Ask yourself this: how certain are you that Tubby would have more championships under his belt at UGA than he earned at UK (albeit with someone else's players)? I love the Dawgs, but I'm not certain that he would have any. Oh, and nice pickup on Matt Dougherty. To me he's the posterchild for internal/legacy hires gone awry.

Tubby's mistake...
... was to STAY at Kentucky for as long as he did.
Going to Kentucky was the right move, staying not so much.  Trying to ignore the insane ingrates who believe UK should win a national championship every year was not a good move.  Better to sucker punch them before they drain the life out of you.

And the move to Minnesota was a brilliant bitch slap in my opinion.  If Tubby had gone to a better program, the rejection wouldn't be so obvious.  The only thing better would be if UK has the guts to schedule Minnesota.  I'm betting Tubby can beat them.

re: Tubby's mistake
34hawk, that's a great point. If Tubby had left after 3-4 years, while the National Title and his run to the Sweet 16 at Georgia were a little fresher, he could have hopped to any open job he wanted. The fact that he left for a decent program in a good conference is a smart move on his part. Call it the Jim Grobe philosophy. In today's coaching world, it is far better for your sanity and health to be a big fish in a little pond. And I agree about the scheduling. There are very few non-SEC games that I really look forward to during the regular season. The list includes UNC-Duke, Michigan-Indiana (most years, anyway) and a few others. But I would love to see Minnesota take on Kentucky.
