RICHT TO FLORIDA STATE

I realize that FSU has already named Jimbo Fisher the "successor" to Bobby Bowden should Bowden step down.  I further realize that should FSU decide to go with someone other than Jimbo that the school will have to pay Jimbo $2.8 Million.

HOWEVER,

I also realize that Mark Richt was offensive coordinator at FSU under Bowden.

I also realize that Richt's contract has an opt-out clause for an undisclosed school.

I also realize that should FSU dump Fisher, Richt would be the leading candidate for FSU to go after.

My question is this:

Could Coach Richt be lured away by the scent of a lesser stag, or is he now a "Georgia Man" through and through?

Where did you get the information . . .
. . . regarding the opt-out clause in Coach Richt's contract?

I'm not disputing you, but that's the first I'm hearing of it. When Coach Richt was introduced in 2000, the question was asked whether there would be exceptions to his buyout clause for Florida State and Miami (Florida). The answer was a clear "no."

If memory serves, Coach Richt renegotiated his contract following the 2002 and 2005 S.E.C. championship seasons. I don't recall any news reports stating that any changes had been made to his buyout clause, other than the fact that the buyout amount was increased significantly in 2002, when he finalized his new deal before the Sugar Bowl.

Once again, I'm not saying you're wrong, because I don't know for certain that you are. If you're right, though, it's the first I'm hearing of it.

If you could cite a source or, ideally, provide a link, I'd be most appreciative.

He's wrong to my understanding...
though I couldn't find the original article in the AJC from earlier this year or last year.  Richt's contract is public information, and to my recollection, the AJC obtained a copy and found there was no opt-out clause.  This is typically something used by FSU or Miami fans to feel better about their prospects in the future and is otherwise not grounded in the reality of Richt's contract.  Here's a blog link that discusses it:
