Game Day Open Comment Thread

This is your game day open comment thread. Your impressions of the day's college football action are welcome below. Since the Bulldogs will not be playing today (alas), there is no honorary game day captain.

Paul Westerdawg, who recently and deservedly passed a major milestone for which all of us here at Dawg Sports salute and congratulate him, has your Georgia fan rooting guide. You can also follow the action through the SB Nation family of weblogs at the following team-specific sites:

As always, of course, you can follow all the action with Sunday Morning Quarterback.

Go 'Dawgs!

ACC Championship Game
Jim Donnan was right.  It's the World's Smallest Outdoor Cocktail Party.

Navy won (big).
Paul Johnson gets one for the road?

Bowl Update
Looks like VT in the Orange Bowl.

One thing that PWD might have forgotten is Troy-FAU.
Right now, FAU is whipping Troy, but the Dogs probably would like Troy to win that game because it could help in the computer rankings so Kansas, LSU, etc. don't jump us in the B(C)S rankings.

SEC Championship Game
I thought Fulmer made his Faustian bargain in 98 to get the NC.  How did he acquire this infernal ability to fluster opposing kickers?

SECCG
LSU is missing all sorts of key people.

Tennessee is no exactly setting the world on fire.

It's an interesting game, but basically an anti-climax for the Conference.  Still, I hope LSU pulls it out...

Hmm...
Just got back from dinner.  WVU 7 Pitt 3 at the half.  Did WVU collectively take valium before the kickoff?  And White is out.

Not getting my hopes up, though.  Am I?

by DavetheDawg on Dec 1, 2007 9:23 PM EST reply actions

Pitt 10 WVU 7...
The WVU band spelled "BCS" on the field at halftime.  That's gotta be a jinx, right?

by DavetheDawg on Dec 1, 2007 9:48 PM EST reply actions

just remember
South Carolina, Vandy and Kentucky all could have put us in the SECCG with late FGs and none of them did. Don't get your hopes up to high about Pitt.

by fotodog on Dec 1, 2007 9:50 PM EST reply actions

ummm...
missouri and wvu are both losing. just saying...though that yall might be interested

by Dawgb1 on Dec 1, 2007 9:51 PM EST reply actions

I can't believe it
Pitt won.
We will still need help from OU and the polls as there is a lot of anti-UGA talk and LSU & VT could both jump us, but who knows at this point?

by fotodog on Dec 1, 2007 11:00 PM EST reply actions

OK...
My hopes are officially up.  By the way...I think we've witnessed a worse referee than Penn Wagers.  That Skeletor who kept calling holding on #88 for Pitt has got to be on Rich Rodriguez' payroll.  Pitt won, there is justice.

I am drinking beer again...

Just Damn
I don't think the dawgs are going to go to the championship game, they are all saying lsu will go.  Why in the heck did they rank georgia 4th if they didn't intend for them to get a chance?

by lisabelle on Dec 1, 2007 11:28 PM EST reply actions

Crap
We could end up in the Sugar Bowl against Hawaii. That means Martinez is going to have to get his crap together and get the players ready for a completely different offense.

by fotodog on Dec 1, 2007 11:36 PM EST reply actions

arrgghh
I just don't understand why the BCS ranked georgia 4th if they had no intention of moving them to 2nd if the #1 and #2 teams lost, it is just mind boggling

by lisabelle on Dec 1, 2007 11:46 PM EST reply actions

about the sugar bowl...
We wouldn't necessarily go to the Sugar Bowl.  The Rose will get the first choice, and they might take us over Illinois.  But the Sugar would get the second, and then the last choice.  That sounds like us and Hawaii, unless...

Go Huskies!

We'll see tomorrow night . . .
. . . but, if I had to guess, L.S.U. will jump us and we'll get U.S.C. in the Rose Bowl.

I can't conscientiously argue with that, since L.S.U. won the S.E.C. title, and I certainly wouldn't complain about getting the Trojans in Pasadena.

Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl definitely is the worst B.C.S. scenario for the 'Dawgs.

by T Kyle King on Dec 2, 2007 12:02 AM EST reply actions

I don't know, Kyle...
I've been on the fence about BCS vs. playoffs, but your arguments against playoffs in the past have swayed me somewhat.  But since we're in the situation we're in because of the BCS, and there is no BCS rule preventing a non-conference champ from playing in the MNC, I don't see why Georgia shouldn't go over LSU.

Even Coach Richt pointed out on Sportscenter that it's who the voters think is the #2 team, not who the voters think is the #2 conference champ.

Now do I think that UGA is more deserving of the MNC shot than LSU? No.  But I don't think they are less deserving either.

by Will on Dec 2, 2007 1:05 AM EST up reply actions

Kyle, no way we make the Rose
While the Rose gets the first at-large selection, BCS rules require that if the Rose would want to take us, the Sugar would have to release us.

That ain't got a snowball's chance in hell of happening.

In good news, Washington's still beating Hawaii 28-14 at the half, so that could easily open the door for a UGA/Clemson Sugar Bowl, which would be kinda' cool.  Certainly better than UGA/HAwaii.

But UGA's Rose Bowl chances are officially dead.

by CAJason80 on Dec 2, 2007 1:18 AM EST up reply actions

My bad
I hadn't considered what L.S.U.'s ascension to the title game would do to Georgia's Rose Bowl chances.

We could still get the Rose Bowl if Oklahoma (which did, after all, beat the No. 1 team in the country last night!) gets in instead of L.S.U.

The worst case scenario remains the most probable: Hawaii came back and scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to beat Washington, so we may get stuck with these Polynesian parvenus by the French quarter. . . .

Please, please, please, please...
please, please, please, please, please, PLEASE, please, please, please, please, please.  PLEASE!  As an Ole Miss alum and hearty Georgia fan, LSU cannot go to the NC over UGA.  My head will seriously explode.  So please, please, please, please, please, please, please, pleeeease, please.  Someone tell somebody that I said PLEASE.

by roun on Dec 2, 2007 12:43 AM EST reply actions

Still not Rosy
If LSU jumps us and goes to the NCG, the Rose cannot take us.  If Ohio State is #1, the Rose will have first pick, but they cannot take Georgia without the consent of the Sugar Bowl, because the Sugar will also have lost their tie-in champion. The rule from the BCS website says:

"When two bowls lose host teams, then the bowl losing the number one team may not select a replacement team from the same Conference as the number two team, unless the bowl losing the number two team consents."

The case for Georgia. . .
I share Kyle's view on the whole "we need a playoff system that will yield a clear national champion" fever that seems to be gaining momentum.  If we had a playoff system, the excitement created by No. 1 and No. 2 losing every week this season would have been nonexistent and the season itself largely meaningless.  That being said, I am excited to hear the guys at the worldwide leader talking about Georgia being in the so-called national title game.  I swear Scott Van Pelt just became our biggest proponent.  They even called Coach Richt after West Virginia lost tonight and let him make out his case for why UGA should get the nod over LSU.  My left brain cannot get around the idea of Georgia playing for the national title when we did not even play for, much less win, our conference championship, but dang it's exciting.

Kyle was right about Kansas.  He seems to be right about Hawaii.  I'm betting he's right about the ascendancy of glory days for Georgia football.  Do you think it's just coincidence that on the same day all this has come to pass ESPN unveiled Herschel Walker as the third greatest college football player of all time AND they pointed out that the last time Pitt beat a team ranked No. 2 was when Pitt beat UGA in the 1982 Sugar Bowl?

UGA's on everybody's mind for a reason, baby.  Go Dawgs!

by College Buddy on Dec 2, 2007 1:05 AM EST reply actions

Whatever happens....
... I can't stand to hear all those ESPN pundits bad-mouthing the Dawg's chance for the NC.  Even IF I agree that we shouldn't get a shot at the NC since we didn't win the conference, it still hurts to hear anyone saying out loud anything negative against Georgia. F'em.

I was saying last summer that UGA could go to the national championship this year. Admittedly, for the wrong reasons:  I thought Bailey and Massaquoi would be unstoppable with a confidant Stafford, and that Kregga-gga would roll over everyone; little did I knowshawn how the season would really turn out...

In any case, a national championship win by Georgia this year would be slightly soured by all the B.C.S. nonsense that's gone on... but we'd prove them all wrong by winning it again next year.

Go dawgs!
